Symantec Endpoint Protection, developed by Broadcom Inc., is a security software suite that consists of anti-malware, intrusion prevention and firewall features for server and desktop computers.[2] It has the largest market-share of any product for endpoint security.[3]

Recently I had to do a reinstall of SEPM 11.0.6005.562 (on windows sbs 2008) after this obviouisly none of the SEP clients (all on windows 7) would connect so I created a new domain addded the old domain ID and recreated the old groups. After a refresh all the old clients showed up. However, on the client machine it says that the server is offline and in SEPM it has the computer off logo beside the clients. I can't replace the sylink file as no clients are currently connected. Also when tried to reinstall SEP from the SEPM it doesn't work either. The only thing I can guess it would be is that it is the folder permissions of D:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager. I don't think it is the firewall as none of those settings have been touched since symantec last worked

All clients are 64 bit and I am running SEPM on a 64 bit Windows SBS 2008 server which I previously stated. Also like I said before I have had symantec running for over a year and the current set-up is exactly the same, the SEP clients and SEPM server only stopped communicating when I reinstalled SEPM.

IPsec isn't used and I have tried to test the connection between the SEPM server and SEP client with the firewall switched off. So I believe that my current set-up should support symantec flawlessly, but it looks like I am missing something!

I managed to resolve my issue. I realised I had two entries in the firewall exception rules for opening port 1812 so I removed the symantec one I created. Then I disabled the network policy server services as this wasn't being used.

So in this case, you the person doing the install, will have to determine that you have completed the install of Symantec, since the software can't detect it. Typically the install of Symantec requires two reboots before it is done doing all of the configuration that it wants to do. So what I recommend is that you do is follow the instructions in Symantec section for anti-virus support ( -us/citrix-app-layering/4/layer/layer-antivirus-apps.html#symantec-endpoint-protection). Do the two reboots after you finish those steps, and then tell the service that you want to bypass the layer check. This is done by a regedit, and navigating to the HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Service\Uniservice and adding a DWORD value called BypassLayerCheck and set it to 1. This is documented here: in the final section of the file where it talks about getting the reboot requests. In this case you can do the override because you as the human know that Symantec keeps updating the same file and that the machine is booting correctly with this updated file and thus you can allow the shutdown.

I'm setting up a new "server" in our envrionment, but that server is actually just a laptop running Windows 7 with IIS and coldfusion. I'm getting ready to push the client install package to it and it got me thinking. I know its not a server OS (2008, 2012, etc), but techincally I'm utilizing it as a server even though its running Windows 7. So my question is, what is the difference between full protection for clients and full protection for servers? Can I install the full protection for servers on this box, even though its not running a MS server OS? Thanks in advance

In ADMIN > Device Support > Event, search for "symantec endpoint" in the Device Type and Description columns to see the event types associated with this device.

Our leadership in endpoint security will remain unsurpassed as we continue to invest in new approaches to finding and stopping attacks at the endpoint with SEP, SES Enterprise (adds cloud managed and mobile threat defense) and SES Complete (adds advanced protection, EDR, and Threat Hunting capabilities).
