Where in the world did this Anita Roddick person get her information? I
know where she DIDN'T get it, from any citizen of the USA. I have lived
long enough to remember (vaguely) the "red scare" witchhunts of the early
fifties, the national division and ultimate tragedy of Vietnam, the murder
of a young president, and the triumph of an extraordinary civilian who took
that "one small step" on another world. I can honestly say that I have
never been prouder to be an American.
Maybe it's my heritage as a fifth generation Texan. One of those unschooled
immigrants who shouted "remember the Alamo" on the killing field at San
Jacinto, where Texans won their liberty, was my great-great-grandfather.
The attitude I see in most of the actions of my government, and in most of
the people I work with and see on a daily basis is simply, "never forget
9/11". As for personal liberties, I have never felt so free. It was made
painfully obvious that we erred in assuming that our shores were immune to
those who would exploit the freedoms offered here for the purpose of doing
us harm. Yes, I've been inconvenienced getting on a few more planes, had to
pass through a few more magnetometers entering public buildings, etc., but
that is the price that I, and all free Americans willingly and gladly accept
to help avoid further violations of our safety and sovereignty.
While our leaders are certainly mortal, and therefore subject to errors in
judgment and lapses in wisdom, they are still OUR leaders. However flawed
the method might be (check out Florida, 2000), these leaders are chosen by
the people, and those at every level, from the local city hall to the White
House, are subject to more checks and balances than in any other nation on
the face of the earth. It may be a little slow at times, and it isn't
always pretty, but OUR SYSTEM WORKS. As for our friends, cousins and
"allies" across the pond, all I can say is "how soon they forget".
