It is probably displaying the actual connection speed with your isp. A
lot will depend on how far away you are from the nearest switching
station. If you put the settings for your modem to 115200 it will show
an estimate of 56K but what you are seeing is probably the reality of
your connection. A hardware driven modem might change this but then
again it might not. You can go to your connection settings, under
advanced and check the hardware (RTS/CTS) box so that it will act as
if it were a hardware driven modem. Try calling your ISP and ask what
modems they use, you can buy the same modem but their is no guarentee
of a higher connection speed. I had the same modem as yours 2 years
ago and after acting badly for about a month it finally died so it
might also be that your modem is dying a slow death. This might be a
consideration if it was working better before or some changes might
have been made on the isp's end of the line. Sorry no simple answer
other than it is probably working as it should. Make sure their is no
static on your phone line, if their is complain to the phone company,
I have had to on a few occassions and they always fixed it.
