An inspiration for all ages
Member Profile: Maggie Morgan-Butcher

Name: Magie Morgan-Butcher
Age: 10
Comunity Involvement :
Innovator of the Bicycle Coalition Youth Membership Neighborhod:
Richmond District

Ten-year-old Maggie Morgan-Butcher and her friend, Annie, were already
seasoned bike riders when, at 8 years old, they started attending SFBC
Volunteer Nights.
Inspired by her brother, Ben, who is two years younger and already an
avid bike rider, Maggie decided to bike to school instead of walking
or being driven. Maggie and Ben attend Alamo Elementary School at 23rd
Ave in the Richmond, a downhill ride from their house on 29th
Ave."I don't see why (other kids) get driven and not bike to school
since they live so close," says Maggie.
"Besides, riding bikes is a lot more fun than using cars."
After listening to the adults try to find ways of getting more
bicyclists on the road, Maggie and Annie started to wonder how they
could be of some use to get kids to ride their bikes more.
"We listened in on the meetings and thought the children would be
inspiration to the adults and
parents," said Maggie. "If the kids started riding, maybe more adults
would ride." That inspiration was followed up with Maggie writing a
letter to the SFBC, introducing the idea of starting, in her words, a
Junior Bicycle Coalition, now being called the Youth Membership
program, where kids could become members and even have their own
meetings.
Maggie believes advertising is the key to getting kids involved. She
is prepared to pass out fliers
advertising the Youth Membership program at her school to inspire
others to become riders and new members.
Maggie's goals for the Youth Membership program are to show kids how
great biking can be, and to help the adults figure out how to get more
people out of their cars and onto their bikes. Her first order of
business will be to advocate for bike racks at her school.
Right now there are none.
"Annie and I want more bike lanes," she adds. "Riding on the sidewalk
isn't as much fun, and Lake Street is great to ride because of the
bikes lanes."
Maggie also believes kids biking more means more family activities
together. She and her family often ride in Golden Gate Park on
weekends. Her favorite spots include Stow Lake and the track in the
Polo Field where she learned how to ride.
"Biking is something kids and parents can do together," she explains
Maggie's love for biking
does make her mom Maria a little nervous.
"It's scary as a mom because the right-turn drivers don't always slow
down for bikers" Maria says. "She has inspired me to get out there
(biking), but I would be much calmer if there were more traffic
calming measures and more bike lanes."
If it's up to Maggie, the kids are on their way to help make that
possible.
