CELEBRATION OF LIFE & FAITH:

Charles William Knapp

October 17, 1940 – March 09, 2022

Memorial service on Saturday, April 23, 2022,

11 AM at First Presbyterian Church of Redding

2315 Placer Street, Redding, California, 96001

It has been difficult to find the words to let everyone know that Chuck passed away March 09, 2022, after a 13-year battle with Chronic Neuropathic Pain, COPD, Kidney Disease and more. Chuck passed away at home with his wife, Kandi at his side.  Our son, Robert & daughter-in-law, Tristan had just gotten home from work in time to greet the paramedics.

We are holding a memorial service on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at 11 AM at First Presbyterian Church of Redding:  2315 Placer Street, Redding, California, 96001.  Following the service, we will have a potluck luncheon in the Fellowship Hall.

We will be live streaming the Memorial Service.  Details to follow.

Chuck was born October 17, 1940, in Emlenton, Pa. to the late Franklin Donald Knapp and Bertha Lucille Rossey Knapp.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Donald Leroy Knapp and Kenneth James Knapp and two sisters Frances Knapp and Barbara Ann Kline.

In addition to his wife, Kandi Marie Knapp, Chuck is survived by two sisters, Carol Hill and husband Larry of Cooperstown, PA., Wendy Struthers of Seneca, PA., Daughter: Tina Heliker and husband Wayne of North East, PA., Sons: Kenneth Knapp and wife Norma Jean of Titusville, PA., Robert L. Ward and wife Tristan of Redding, CA. and Todd W. Knapp-Au and wife Jessica of E. Palo Alto, CA.

Chuck has One Granddaughter; Petra Ward and fiancée Allyssa Sosebee of Redding and Three Grandsons; Kyle Heliker of Virginia, Alex Heliker of PA. and Honu Kai Knapp-Au of E. Palo Alto, CA.

Chuck grew up on the family farm in PA. and gained the nick name WILD BILL at a very early age.  Around the age of 5 he would take his mother’s horse in the woods on the property, set up camp, fix some food and rest for the night.  As he got older, he would take off with his horse and go hunting or fishing and set up camp for a couple of days before heading back home. He loved being outdoors with nature. Then came the cars.  All three boys loved working on cars and took a lot of pride in their workmanship and getting them running.

Chuck joined the Navy and served on the USS BENNINGTON, assigned to Attack Squadron ONE TWO FIVE.  He was stationed at Moffett Field, CA and Lemoore, CA for a while and fell in love with CA.  From Feb 01, 1958, until his Honorable Discharged from the UNITED STATES NAVY on October 16, 1961.  He went back to his family in PA where he married his first wife: Joanne Virginia Musser and adopted a baby girl Tina Marie and Chuck’s brother’s son, Kenneth James Knapp.  Chuck and Joanne divorced, and the children remained with Joanne.

Chuck left PA and came to California to work for Kaiser Cement & Gypsum in Cupertino.  In Feb. of 1972 he met Kandi Marie Ward at a B&B Beginners Square Dance club. A month later Chuck met her son Robert L. Ward, and they began dating; fell in love and married on June 2, 1973. Followed by the birth of their son Todd W. Knapp.

Chuck enjoyed being in Indian Guides with both boys, camping, hunting, and fishing.  As they grew older, he introduced them to Rendezvous to experience living pre 1840 in a tee-pee or sheep-herders tent, throw hawks, shooting flintlocks & muzzle loaders and archery.  Each evening after the events of the day at Rendezvous it was time to clean all the rifles and safely store them for the next day.  Robert & Chuck both dressed as mountain men while Todd lived in a loin cloth most of the time and then started making all his own clothes.

Chuck joined Immanuel Presbyterian Church of San Jose with Kandi while they were dating and became a member.  Chuck, Stan Holt, and Robert found their special nook at church, upstairs in the sound both.  They were always available to help with any extra requests made, whether it was a Luncheon, Mother Daughter Tea, Monday Thursday Dinner, Pentecost BBQ, Wedding, Talent Show …

Chuck loved church potlucks and cooking in the kitchen for Thanksgiving Church Dinner & events, and especially the Pentecost BBQ at Immanuel in San Jose with the “Canopy of Many Colors” made by Dorothy Perry.  Gathering with family and friends was always closest & dearest to his heart.

Chuck loved helping others with home repairs, work on special projects, plumbing and Kandi’s ever-growing HONEY DO LIST: remodeling not one but two kitchens, landscaping the back yard, residing the house, remodeling a bathroom and on and on.

When it came time to retire Chuck chose Redding where he loved to hunt with Stan, Tom, George, and the boys.  Once here in Redding Shawn Coulter taught Chuck how to fly fish and that was the beginning of a well-loved adventure, he was able to do long after his illness hit in May 2009.

Chuck was a man of many talents, a hard worker, a big heart for helping others, a loving father and husband.  He didn’t always agree with the paths family chose but he never stopped loving us.

Prayer for – God Is Faithful: A Thanksgiving Message from Will Graham

There is a beautiful passage on the topic of thankfulness found in Psalm 106:1, which you may know by heart. In fact, you might have sung a version of it in church or at a worship service:

“Praise the Lord! Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!” —Psalm 106:1, ESV

It’s an uplifting statement, which springs from a grateful heart. God is good! In the highs and lows of life, the mountains and valleys, He is worthy of our unending thanks and praise.

If you focus only on the first verse of Psalm 106, you would think that this chapter is going to be full of joy, contentment, and excitement, but—frankly—it’s not. Psalm 106 goes on to chronicle Israel’s sad history of sinning against God.

The chapter covers everything from forgetting God’s “wondrous works” while captive in Egypt (v. 7) to building idols and worshiping a “metal image” (v. 19), and yoking “themselves to the Baal of Peor” (v. 28). We witness seemingly minor transgressions such as jealousy (v. 16) and truly heinous acts such as sacrificing their sons and daughters to the “idols of Canaan,” also referred to as “demons” (vv. 37–38).

We also see that God didn’t ignore—let alone approve—of the Israelites’ sinfulness. Psalm 106 is filled with punishment and judgment.

Interspersed in the penalties for their sins, however, was the faithfulness and longsuffering of God. Though the Israelites repeatedly turned their backs on Him and “provoked the Lord to anger with their deeds” (v. 29), God’s mercy and character were evident. He delivered them time and time again, despite their many—and horrifying—transgressions.

This passage perfectly captures both the righteous judgment and unending love of God.

For the psalmist, there is no sugarcoating the situation. There are no excuses or attempts to explain away the sinfulness. Rather, the depravity is clear and spelled out, and the punishment was just. The fact that God had any mercy at all on these broken humans was reason enough to give thanks. Given their outright disobedience, He could have removed His hand from them completely. But instead, He was faithful.

As we approach Thanksgiving of 2022, perhaps we could say something very similar. We live in a culture saturated in sin. We are called to be set apart as followers of Christ, yet many who claim the name of Jesus excuse or justify lives that are opposed to His Word. We look down on the Israelites and their legacy of turning their backs on God, but we do the same thing and don’t feel the smallest bit of remorse.

Through it all, God is faithful! While there is breath in our lungs, there is still time to repent and come back to Him, turning away from sin and claiming a new life in Him. The fact that He still calls us to Himself rather than turning His back is reason for thankfulness, praise, and worship.

This year as you celebrate Thanksgiving, I pray that you will return to God. Like the Israelites, cry out to God in your sorrow and suffering, and know that He is right where you left Him, waiting for you to come home. Then you, too, can proclaim, “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!”

Will Graham

No Thanksgiving would be complete without sharing the traditional prayer penned by Dear Abby’s mother:

Oh, Heavenly Father, We thank Thee for food and remember the hungry.

We thank Thee for health and remember the sick.

We thank Thee for friends and remember the friendless.

We thank Thee for freedom and remember the enslaved.

May these remembrances stir us to service.

That Thy gifts to us may be used for others.

Amen

Have a happy and safe celebration, everyone!

This prayer from Dear Abby was a favorite of my late wife, Nadine. It is included here in her memory.

  • Love, Larry

Your KING is coming to you. He is RIGHTEOUS and VICTORIOUS

At this time of year, we celebrate the King of kings who left His throne in Heaven to live among us. Knowing we could never reach Him on our own, He came down to us—as one of us—to save us from our sin.

Whatever challenges you face today, remember that the Light of the World has come to vanquish the darkness. He was born in a manger to die on a cross—so that we might live forever.

May this Good News of great joy fill your heart with peace, now and in the coming year.

Merry Christmas from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
