George William Magladry, Jr.

George William Magladry, Jr. was born March 15,1923 in Modesto, CA and passed away January 9,2022 at Willow Springs Memory Care in Redding, CA. at the age of 98. His parents were George William Magladry, Sr. and Dorothy Rice Magladry. To avoid confusion about their names, George William, Jr., assumed the name of Bill. He had one sister, Marilyn Wright, who preceded him in death in 1999. In 1942 Bill joined the Army and told them he was a pre-med student. He was deferred for a while and was put in the advanced placement program at Stanford Medical School, subsequently graduating in three years. When he was a senior student he was also an intern. Bill graduated from Stanford School of Medicine in 1947. He maintained a 4.0 GPA through school and the medical studies. Bill had a successful career as a surgeon with a specialty in Thoracic surgery at numerous hospitals in San Francisco, Marin County and both hospitals in Redding, CA. His busy career included Clinical Professor of Surgery at Stanford, Diplomate American Board of Surgery, Fellow American College of Surgeons, President Medical Staff at Mercy Hospital, Chief of Surgery at Redding Medical Center, President Governing Board at Redding Medical Center, treasurer of the North Pacific Surgical Association, plus Chairman Credentials Committees at numerous hospitals in San Francisco, Marin County and both private hospitals in Redding.

Bill had a love of traveling and enjoyed visiting several countries in Europe and Asia. This included Scotland, Ireland, England, Belgium, Italy, France, Germany, and Hong Kong. Sometimes he participated in working cattle on various ranches in Brazil, Argentina, Hawaii, and Mexico. He stated that he probably rode from one end of Mexico to the other end on horseback. Between 1927 and 1941 he probably rode horseback to every mountain, lake, and stream from Lake Tahoe to the Mexican border. He was known as the mule packing doctor.

His lifelong love affair with horses, mules, and Corrientes Mexican roping cattle started right after birth growing up on a large ranch in central California. In 1923 his father became involved in planting of trout in the rivers, streams, and lakes of the High Sierra with the California Department of Fish and Game. In 1965 he relocated to Shasta County and recognized the opportunity to resume his horse and mule related activities. Bill loved the Trinity Alps and visited nearly every lake and stream. He had a covered arena built that was the only covered arena of its size between Sacramento and Portland for many years.

Bill was a natural born storyteller and never at a loss for words. With an amazing photographic memory he could readily recall amazing information and details. Besides that, his extensive experience in cooking led him to a life-long appreciation of gourmet cooking.

Bill enjoyed reading, hunting, fly fishing, skiing, horseback riding, roping, mule packing, and always a good night cap of Bushmills. His knowledge of the English language prepared him for the challenges of written documents and medical articles. He could converse in five different languages.

Bill had 5 children with his first wife Marilyn who passed in April, 2021. Survivors include his wife Wilma, daughters Wendy and her fiancé Mike Koehler, Betsy, Nancy Cooper (Mike), son George William Magladry lll, and a step daughter, Nicole Kure, from his 2nd wife, Patricia and an adopted daughter through another marriage Kelly McTimmonds from his 3rd wife, Helen He was preceded in death by son Robert, who is survived by wife, Susan, and an adopted son through another marriage Kendon Baldwin, from his 3rd wife, Helen. There are 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Bill was a member of the Rancheros Visitadores, Sonoma County Trail Blazers, e Clampus Vitus, Redding Rodeo Association, Free & Accepted Masons of California, Shasta County Cattlemen, Shasta Historical Society, First Presbyterian Church, V A member, and the Philosophical Society.

Whenever someone greeted him with "good to see you" his reply was always "it is good to be seen."

A memorial will be held March 19, 2022 11:00AM at Odd Fellows in Palo Cedro CA.

Prayer for – Prayers requested for the Bill Magladry  family. Bill was 98 when he passed this morning in his sleep. He would have been 99 this coming March. He was living at Willow Springs and had been suffering from Alzheimer's. 

 

Prayers for his wife, Wilma, and the rest of his family and friends, for comfort and the Lord's peace.
