Hi! I was wondering what kind of vinyl/paper and protective layer is
used in making a stencil. I own a Cricut with some really cool
stencils and thought maybe--why not? Any ideas or thoughts?

I believe that you can only use certain "stencil paper" with the Cricut. You may want to check first with the manufacture first.

You can use Stencil material from the fabric store, however it's extremely hard to cut with.

You can use laminate paper that you would use for projector's (the kind a teacher would right on to project up on the board) and it cut's like butter.

I know people that do this for the airbrush stencils and they've been doing this for years!

Hope this helps!

Most use Mylar film which is more rigid and durable. Some use vinyl as
it conforms better to the skin. SNAZAROO offers it in both since they
use a high tech laser. If you are using a blade cutter vinyl (thick)
is the best option. If it is for one project, you can hand cut them on
wax paper.

How many millimeters would a hand cut versus a machine cut vinyl be?
Thanks, Robbie Pack

I just acquired a big cutter - I am cutting reg 3-4 mil vinyl and a
good many 7.5 - which is like Temptu stencils.
We are cutting a good many glitter tattoos stencils now.
You might want to network with some folks at the Tatstore fourm a
whole bunch of them are using Cricuts.

I love having been able to redo all my signage with vinyl letters.

Robbie you can hand cut easy up to 5 mil. You can hand cut thicker
too, the ease of it depends on the material.
ie Plaid stencil material is easy - Mylar™ stencil material is tricky
even at 5 as it is slick, 7 doable but details are difficult - but it
can be mastered, at 10 just too hard. Common sizes 3-4 for glitter,
4-6 for adhesive one time use airbrush tats, 5-10 for airbrush
reusables.
