Hi everyone,

Damn, the erlang guys beat me to it but such is the interwebs :)

This is just a quick note to let you know about the new Sydney Clojure User Group.

You can read the full announcement here: http://bit.ly/clj-syd

We know we'll probably overlap in some of the FP topics once in a while but we feel this is a different need as it's to be focused around Clojure and hands-on as much as possible - while touching more general FP topics and concepts as needed.

Hopefully interests won't clash! :)

So that's it! If you're into Clojure, join the mailing list and go sign up on the wiki to give us a talk!

Next meetup will be on Feb 21st at ThoughtWorks! Don't forget to put your name on the wiki if you're attending.

Cheers and see you next time,
Leonardo Borges

I'm glad you guys are doing stuff, but I do wish we'd seen more Clojure and Erlang talks at FP-Syd. Was it not welcoming? I know most of the talks were Haskell-oriented, but I think that's just the default background of a lot of the people there...

cheers
Mark

Absolutely. When I started FP-Syd is most definitely *not* haskell-syd.
We have more Haskell talks because that what the people who offer
talks are work in.

Perhaps we can see some talks from the new groups re-presented at FP-Syd ?

I don't think "not welcoming" was ever a problem. The way I see it, both groups are complementary.

We have a clear focus on Clojure. Being a functional language, it takes us to more general FP concepts at times, which is where fp-syd is very helpful as well.

Also, we'll try to have more hands on/ hack nights around the language itself, which I think is best done in its own group.

And I'm sure people would not mind presenting topics to both audiences if there's enough interest :) Speaking of which, how do we propose talks to fp-syd? I think this exchange would be very beneficial.

An number of people attending FP-Syd have suggested things like this
but for some reason it has never happened.

BTW, have you ever been to FP-Syd?

Will do that ;)

Not yet. I've just recently got into functional programming - through learning Scheme/Clojure - and when looking at the fp-syd talks, they ended up putting me off a bit. I was looking for something a little more practical and hands on. Hence the new group.

We've been running FP-Syd for 4 years now and had 40 meetings. What you
will find is that the most important people to cater for are the people
who are advanced enough to give presentations themselves. If you don't
do this, the people who *can* give presentations will get bored, stop
coming and then you won't have any presenters any more.

Well, it seems you and the Erlang guys should talk, you're both on on
the same night…

Hey Mark,

My impression is (from the mailing list) that most of the meetings were for people who were already reasonably advanced users of FP languages - speaking for myself I haven't recognised most of the topics announced for talks since I joined the list. Perhaps if the speakers could attach a short description of the topic with a bit of a hook for people who haven't heard of it before?

While Erlang is a FP language,  I think it's the massive parallelism/scalability, proven stability and soft real-time aspects that piqued my interest in the technology for RocketBoots. Supporting a user group is our way of sharing what we've learnt (Michael and Vaughan are the experts, I'm the official provider of noob-level content) and building the local Erlang developer community.

Cheers,
Robin

Absolutely. One of my hopes is that the group will dig up all the Clojure hackers hiding out there ;)

Ok, to facilitate the teeming hordes of hybrid Clojure-Erlang developers out there we've moved our inaugural Erlang meeting forward to Tuesday the 7th of February. Subsequent meetings will be on the first Tuesday of every second month-ish.

Cheers,
Robin
