The change display brightness slider in Windows 7 control panel does nothing. It is simply ignored. If I press Fn+Up or Down, the slider moves, but the brightness does not change. The Dell brightness OSD is displayed with the correct brigtness value, but it does not change (if I set the brightness to 50% before login screen at startup, this status displays 50% all the time).
Well, I contacted the Dell service then and they figured out that I installed the drivers in the wrong order. I can't remember what is the right order, but the Optimus and brightness control does work with the integrated LCD.
However, I still have some issues with the brightness control - when Windows UAC screen is displayed and LCD is dimmed at level 2 (second lowest level), the screen is dimmed to lower level than 1 (the lowest) and stays there even after exiting UAC screen. Second problem arrises every time I use my Dell on batteries and allow it to turn off the display (monitor sleep). After waking up, the colors are all washed out until I open Start menu or switch between windows.

Monitors that have Ambient Light Sensor can use Auto mode to automatically adjust brightness and color temperature based on surrounding light conditions. You can choose to define a brightness range based on your preference.

You can also create customized layouts. Hover over the layout that you want and click the pen icon once it appears. Click and drag the partition line until the layout is customized to your preference. You can also save your customized layouts and use it in future.

No, the monitor is still required to connect with the computer throughout the firmware update. If you unplug the cable during the firmware update, Dell Display Manager prompts you that the firmware has failed to update.
The firmware does not update successfully, and Dell Display Manager prompts you that the firmware has failed to update. If ITDM wants to update again, you must issue the command again. It is not advisable to unplug during the firmware update process. If you are not ready to perform the firmware update, you can defer the update until you are ready.

The firmware update can be done through the dock. However, the pre-requisite is that there is a data path between the computer and the monitors. So, the monitor can stay connected to dock with a USB-C, USB upstream, or thunderbolt cable connected between the dock and the monitor. We cannot use a DP or HDMI cable.
Thank you. I came across a few posts that had 2016 and 2019 seems both OP had commented to update BIOS in order for it to work. Which I have done so as well as updating the 6/i firmware. I will give it a try later this week and report back
I have a R610 & R410 running Server 2019 but we changed the PERC RAID adapter as you may have issues finding drivers. Then also installation of OS is a real hassle. WE moved to ESXi then installed VMs. Note, the server is used for test & lab, not production.
I have never had any issues with using the Dell Windows based installers to install the Dell firmware updates under Windows Core/Hyper-V Server. Just download the update via another machine and copy it over or run it over the network.
If I had a 2012 license and needed to pay for a 2019, I am not sure that I would do that. Do you plan to keep the R710 beyond the extended support date of 2012? I think it goes end of extended supportnin 2023.
Confirming Dell PowerEdge R710 works flawlessly with Windows Server 2019. We have a couple of them running Hyper-V virtual machines on top of a core edition, and everything is managed using RSAT (in some cases) and Windows Admin Center -us/windows-server/windows-admin-center primarily. A step-by-step deployment guide can be found here -admin-center-for-windows-server-2019-getting-started . The recent versions have Device Manager already implemented, so installing and managing drivers is no longer an issue. Yet, as far as I remember, all the drivers were detected and downloaded automatically via Windows Update.
