Given that we are hip-deep in the Mid-War North African campaign, moderated by Michael, I think the time has come to initiate a Late War Campaign, using the new Firestorm Game system as the backdrop. Besides being the current favorite area of development of Battlefront this is also the area of merchandising and stocking that Bev and Karl are investing in.
We could also post a sign-up at the store to invite new players and make it a point to contact all the others that have come in and out of our group. This might be just an incentive to activate new players into our group......
You will find the map easy to use, the mechanics quite simple to use and a lot of fun.
Running a Late War campaign will complement the Mid-War campaign and switching the AoO to the Russian front will give all of us a nice break and shift in focus. The Late War, particularly the Russian Front, has been the main focus of Battlefront this past six month and will be so through October, which should see the advent of the Operation Market-Garden books.
I will provide the mapsheets and abbreviated turn profile for everyone to play. The game largely removes abstractions in play; you determine the battles in the order to be fought, can figure out the troops that are in each battle and then fight the battles. If you win you take the area and if you lose you must retreat.
There are rules for: supply, rail movement, partisans (to block railmovement) and polezei (to clear out partisan units). There are other specialty rules for engineers (advancing line of supply), armoured trains (to open blocked rail corridors) and other units that add flavor to the time and place of the campaign.
While we have some Russian players and some growing Russian forces the game allows for the use of Proxy forces to stand in for the units; if you only have Americans then you can still play, if you want to run some other Late Force, then those can work as well.
As a baseline I am going to suggest that the forces will be a 1750 point force from any legal Late War list; from any approved book or BF pdf/on-line list.
The way the game works is that your main force may be reinforced with specialized units (Firestorm units) that may be in the areas you are attacking from (the attacker) or in the area being attacked (the defender). These specialized units, if available, will be added to your force for that particular battle. Everyone is aware, through map placement, of where all the Firestorm units are located, but through rail movement there is the potential for strategic redeployment.
Michael and I have discussed one way to put a twist into the campaign. In light of the way that Stalin would pit one front commander against another, seeing whom would advance the farthest, we have talked about having two teams of Russian commanders. To represent a willing opponent the one set of commanders would be the primary opponents of the other. Not only would one side win by winning but they could also win by impeding the other team's attempts to win. Teams could shake out how best. Ben and I have good Russian forces (mine are growing quite nicely) and if Clay could be a regular we could play with three main teams of probably two players and be able to play off against each other in a round robin fashion.
