Special Message to Residents About Taking Precautions in the Wake of 5.9 Magnitude Earthquake Centered in Virginia
USGS Earthquake
The Providence Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) today has received confirmation from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) of a magnitude 5.9 earthquake centered in Virginia, 83 miles SW from Washington D.C. that occurred at 1:51 PM Eastern Standard Time. Areas in Providence and around Rhode Island experienced minor tremors from the earthquake. There have been no reports of any building damage at this time. Local authorities are continuing to monitor the situation.
PEMA is advising all residents and businesses to stay tuned to local broadcasts for information and related updates, and practice proper building safety measures in the event of any major natural disaster.
Some precautionary measures to take if you suspect damage has occurred in your building:
  • Check for gas leaks. If you smell gas or hear blowing or hissing noise, open a window and quickly leave the building. Turn off the gas at the outside main valve if you can and call the gas company from a neighbor's home. If you turn off the gas for any reason, it must be turned back on by a professional.

  • Look for electrical system damage. If you see sparks or broken or frayed wires, or if you smell hot insulation, turn off the electricity at the main fuse box or circuit breaker. If you have to step in water to get to the fuse box or circuit breaker, call an electrician first for advice.

  • Check for sewage and water lines damage. If you suspect sewage lines are damaged, avoid using the toilets and call a plumber. If water pipes are damaged, contact the water company and avoid using water from the tap. You can obtain safe water by melting ice cubes.

  • If you are unsure of the condition of your building, call the Building Manager, Local Building Inspector or the Fire Marshal.
If power outage occurs, contact National Grid/Electric at 1-800-322-3223. If gas problems occur, contact National Grid/Electric at 1-800-640-1595. In the event of an emergency call 911.
