What's the backend database behind foursquare?

I have to do a research for college about databases with thousands or million of access. Mainly why to choose this and not that or that.

What database foursquare is using in the backend? Is it a relational database or key/value one? I find it difficult to work with geolocations with key/value ones like Datastore (Google App Engine).
