Fresh Start is starting to put together some training material for new staff and interns and better organize our orientation process for them. I would greatly appreciate any materials you have on hand that you wouldn't mind sharing with us. I have a few things from some of you already (Thanks Helena and Keith!) that we're starting with, as well as the materials from 3 week training, but anything else you're currently using would be great to look at. We're also happy to have phone conversations about your process. Thanks in advance!

Hello Summer,

I'm in the same process too...I've selected one person that is going to replace my staff during her maternity leave. What about Helena documents?? Do you say we where putting on line a Google docs version so to work on it together.
In the meanwhile I've done a folder with all useful articles in English and Italian translations and I've prepared something as a Check list with argument and date of discussions...but I persist it will be extremely interesting to have a common path of answer, example, case study for each argument.
We can discuss on this part all together what you think???

Thanks, Michelle! I've been digging through my old FH stuff and asked Amy to send me the Best Practices outline but haven't heard back from her yet. I can follow up with Elliot and Nancy too (and continue digging out my fellowship materials).

I am pretty sure this is going to turn into a serious project for us. Staff training and development has been a big interest of mine for a while, and at our state conference last month I presented on a workshop on this topic - a little bit of the FH "social practice" model and a lot on the need to train our staff in a deliberate and specific way because most of them come to us with no idea what a clubhouse is, even if they have advanced education in social work and mental health. 

I have every intention of putting together a collection of materials that clubs can use to guide new staff (and interns) through their first 6 months-year of work. Our focus will initially be putting together a sort of course pack and training curriculum that we can use here at Fresh Start because I am keenly aware of the need.  I am a few weeks away from my own 1 year anniversary at this club and since I started we've gone through three hiring processes and hired 4 new staff. 3 of my 5 are new within a year, the 4th has been here just over a year and the 5th - who has 5 years seniority - will likely be leaving within a year or so! ack!

So - we'll be working on some materials for our own use but ideas for expansion are already exploding within my head. A colleague from a local university who's done lots of work with Clubhouses has agreed to help out with some research and theory as well as trying to connect us with a student(s) who could help us develop some web/technology-based tools, which would make sharing even easier. I see a course pack, collection of online resources, and some method to bring new staff together (phone, video?) for dialogue. Here in Michigan I see one or two day intensives, using curriculum which will be available on the website, followed by a series of facilitated electronic gatherings for follow up. 

Anyway, this will all obviously take time, but the more materials we can round up collectively, the faster it will come together!

Fountain House puts all new staff through "MAP," which is basically a guided track/checklist of trainings/discussions they should participate in within their first few months. It covers things like housing, clubhouse employment programs, benefits training, linking with a navigator (a clubhouse member or staff that acts as a mentor), and Best Practices- since clubhouse is so unique from other experiences staff may have had elsewhere, this weekly group (usually led by 2 staff & 2 members) gives new staff a safe place to express themselves & covers various situations that may come up in the clubhouse- for example, "A member asked for my phone #, and I wasn't sure how to respond." Understanding, each clubhouse is unique in terms of the time/resources they have to put towards this- it may be helpful for some to tweak or just use what they feel necessary. Also, Jason we recently put together a power point for a presentation we had & I'd be happy to send it over! I'm not at the clubhouse right now, but I'll send it tomorrow.
