Hello dears Directors and almost directors,

I have some  important questions to ask you related to staff selection and staff responsibilities.

1) In Sweden for example do you have commons Criteria all Swedish Clubhouses? 

2) Which are the compulsory requirements for a staff??? (e.g. university degree and/or Master; for the not English speaking: high level of English knowledge).

3) Who is doing the selection, members and Director???: do you have any sheet to fill by members for the selection?

4) Do you have planned training inside your Clubhouse or  in other Different Clubhouses?

5) All your staff have been following the official training of the International Network??

About Job opportunities I would love to have some example of the kind of temporary job do you succeed to find in your country.

Another big big question, who has the authority to decide when  one Clubhouse is not a real Clubhouse and it is not applying the correct method, even if is not yet accredited?

I want you your feedback in this matter because I think we need to have a common basic approach on many things even thought we have to respect cultural, social and geografic differences.

I think this depends on your own cultural differences in your own country. In the states it’s a masters and in Aus we tend to say a degree.

3) Who is doing the selection, members and Director???: do you have any sheet to fill by members for the selection?

For us – and this isn’t necessarily the way you have to do it – but we have a panel with director / board member and member and we shortlist applications together. We then review the questions together. The best candidates after an interview (our last questions are attached) then have the opportunity to take part in an observation day. This is a chance for both parties to check each other out. Clubhouse is not an environment for everyone and sometimes our boundaries are to loose for the traditional service types. Our members also get the chance to give written feedback back to the panel at the end of the observation day.

We then finish it off with a member interview where all the members in the house on that day get to ask questions relating to that individual. Whatever they want. The panel is not in the room and the members get the final say using general consensus. We are still getting it right but the process has made the community feel more ownership over the positions.

4) Do you have planned training inside your Clubhouse or  in other Different Clubhouses?

We visit other clubhouses in the first month and we always get the staff member to read the entire ICCD training manual in the first couple of days and have regular discussion times.

 

5) All your staff have been following the official training of the International Network??

 

Not yet, It’s a big investment so we normally wait 12 months,

 

About Job opportunities I would love to have some example of the kind of temporary job do you succeed to find in your country.

 

Maybe we should have a hangout on this topic. I started writing but it was heading for pages…

 

Another big big question, who has the authority to decide when  one Clubhouse is not a real Clubhouse and it is not applying the correct method, even if is not yet accredited?

 

Maybe another hangout topic. I would love to see Bjorn answer this J For me a clubhouse is a community where people feel needed and they have choice. The community is constantly and consistently connected with the wider community and offers new opportunities to benefit recovery as often as humanly possible. Its is always the members choice to take part in these opportunities.

 

Accreditation is a tool I do not see it as something that makes a clubhouse… Good question. I would love to do a hangout on this,

Aside from the International Standards, the state of Michigan (where
I'm now based) has a set of standards outlined by the common funding
source all 44 of our clubhouses share. This is a government funding
source (Medicaid) which has its pros and cons. The clubhouse community
in Michigan is actually just about to embark on a project to revise
our Medicaid standards to be more in line with the International
Standards, which will hopefully help some of our clubs which are
struggling some.

In the States it varies. Fountain House NYC only accepts Masters level
employees. In Michigan, our Medicaid standards require that staff be
licensed in some way but don't specify a degree level (there are some
professional licenses that are available at the associate - or 2 year
degree - level). The Club that I am at now requires a bachelors (4
year university) degree.

As the Director, I make the final decision on hiring, but I get a lot
of feedback from members and staff. For our recent hiring process I
gave the whole house a few days to review all the resumes we received
then facilitated a meeting where we reviewed each candidate's
application and made a collective decision about whether or not we
wanted to interview them. We had 13 initial candidates to review and I
have a small house so we did this all together. With more candidates
or a larger house I might have put together a committee. We decided to
interview only 3 of the candidates. I then asked people to submit
their names if they were interested in being on the actual interview
committee. Of those people I selected 3 members and one staff (plus
myself) to conduct the interviews. I'll attach the questions - we
asked a lot this time around. Probably too many, but it went really
well despite this!

Immediately after each interview the committee made general comments,
listed all pros and cons of each candidate, and specifically addressed
the candidates qualifications in three broad areas: 1) experience with
mental health/illness, 2) experience with vocational support/job
development (this is what we are hiring for right now), and 3) general
likability/respect for members/attitude/do they fit clubhouse culture.
Candidates who we like get moved forward to a second round interview.

A second round interview sounds somewhat similar to Toowoomba's
observation day. Candidates spend a half day working in the units with
members and staff and have lunch with us. Colleagues are free to
informally ask questions of the candidate as they are working
side-by-side. After lunch we ask the candidate to leave and process
peoples' reactions as a group, similar to how the committee did after
the first round interviews.

After all the interviews are done, I'll take the temperature of the
house again. My experience is that frequently the members choose the
same person the director is leaning toward, but I'm clear that the
final decision is not necessarily made by consensus and that I am
seeking feedback and opinions, not decision making. This view might be
different than some other people have, but because I see ensuring that
the staff uphold the standards as part of my bottom line
responsibility I want to have bottom line decision making for choosing
that person. That said, I really do have a lot of conversations with
members and staff about what they think and why and try my best to
choose the candidate who wins the "popular vote".

I typically send new staff to go work a few days to a couple weeks at
2 or 3 other strong clubhouses nearby as soon as they start. I have
the luxury of having several other accredited and longstanding
clubhouses with very strong directors all within an hours drive of me
so that makes it easy. We are also going to be starting a monthly
discussion group (required for staff, voluntary for members) where we
talk about philosophy, cover ongoing training, read articles, etc. to
keep staff fresh.

At the moment, none of my current staff have been to ICCD training at
a training base. I'm currently looking at who I can send within the
next couple years.

The common wisdom around job development is to think about who the
major employers in your community are - the companies that *any* job
seeker would want to work for - and try to get your members jobs
there. However, my current club has actually had some luck around
courting new businesses as they are opening up. Small, local places
may be more interested in cultivating a relationship with community
organizations than huge corporate franchises. We've been able to do
this with a local brewery and two local pizza places.

I think you are absolutely right in this. Technically, it is Clubhouse
International who does this, but as you and Luke both mentioned, for
various reasons, an accreditation may or may not actually indicate how
closely the standards are being followed. I think one of the things
that was heavily underscored for me while I was at Fountain House was
how much the responsibility of upholding the standards falls on us,
the directors. It is our job to maintain them at our own clubs and our
job to reach out to each other regionally and create and uphold our
own local version of what it means to create community within a
clubhouse.

As I mentioned, Michigan is just about to revise the formal local
standards we have in place with the assistance of our state liaison
who fortunately really gets clubhouse and wants us to do it. I am
lucky enough to have been asked to sit on this work-group, but it's
because I historically have spoken up about issues, built
relationships outside of my clubhouse, and have been an active member
of our state coalition.

Oh by the way, when making a Google+ Event, you can make it a Hangout Event, which means it automatically starts up a Hangout at the nominated time and invites everyone.

Hello Roberta, I have been quiet for a while because of the wonderful summer in Sweden and also arranging the SECOND INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON CLUBHOUSE RESEARCH in Stockholm, August 8-9. Have spent three weeks on a shipyard with my Houseboat, renovating and painting.

I´m also involved in a National anti-stigma campaign and on top of that I have starting up groups for new Clubhouses in South Africa, Tanzania, Gambia and Philippines.

How do you celebrate your birthday? By coming to Sweden?

About the hang-out I´m flexible.
