Hi All,
I hope this is the right spot for me to respond!

I am a 3rd grade English teacher at a bilingual elementary school in
DC. This is my third year teaching, and my second as a 3rd grade
teacher. Although I am "general education" teacher, I have many
students with IEPs and students who have special and different needs.
I am excited about this class, and very interested in learning about
working with ELLs, since almost 80% of my students are native Spanish
speakers.

I also want to find out more about differentiating to enrich. I tend
to do a lot of remediation, but not that much enriching for students
who can go beyond the grade level content, or who already have skills
that many of my other students don't.

Thanks. I am excited about this semester!

Hello there! I too hope that 'reply' is the right way to respond on
this!

I am a 3rd grade teacher at Truesdell Elementary School in DC. This is
my fourth year teaching in an urban classroom but my first year in
DCPS. I have been teaching since 1991. I am looking forward to
learning more about special education and how it all works. For most
of my teaching career, I have been in private schools where we did not
have a SPED dept and for the last three years I have taught at a DC
charter where the SPED dept was a mess and did not serve our students
well. I learned via my AU classmates last year just how dysfunctional
we were! However, the school hired outside service providers for
physical therapy and speech therapy and these folks were some of the
most gifted and amazing educators I have ever worked with. This
year, my school has a comprehensive mental health team to support our
students and again, some of these folks are incredibly caring and a
wonderful gift to students.

I have a lot to learn and I look forward to the readings and
discussions.

Hi everyone,

I'm a second grade ELL teacher at Barnard Elementary School in DC.
This is my second year teaching (and also my second year as a TFA
Corps Member!). I absolutely love teaching so far and am looking
forward to continuing it for many years.

I work in both inclusion and pull out models so I'm familiar with some
of the same challenges as special educators. I'm really hoping to
learn more about differentiating for students with special needs in
both pull out and inclusion settings. I have several students with
special needs on my caseload this year and can't wait to serve them
more effectively!

Hello,

My name is Alida Maravi and I am a 2nd grade teacher in a DC public
school. This is my 2nd year teaching and is also my 2nd year as a
Teach for America corps member.

In my 2nd grade class I have students with IEPs as well as students
who are being closely monitored for potential special education
identification. What I would like to learn in this course are
concrete strategies (that I can bring into the classroom) for meeting
the needs of my special education kids, both academically and
behaviorally.

This semester I would like to implement structured intervention plans
for students who are struggling with academics and social adaptation.
I try to do as much as I can for them day to day, but feel as if I
haven't had the time or guidance to create a specialized plan that
will guide my differentiated instruction. Hopefully this class will
help me out with that!

Best,

Alida

Greetings!
I am originally from Miami, Florida. I was born into a family of
Educators/Administrators. I completed my undergraduate degree at a
university in Atlanta, Georgia.

I am an experienced teacher (currently teaching 37-6th grade
students) ,who definitely believes in educating "the whole child."

Teaching was not an occupation that I wanted to secure. My love was
in
Communications. However, my parents swayed me into another direction.
Obviously...lol.

Most of my teaching experience has been in lower income,
disadvantaged
communities; in which student exposure to life outside the obvious,
was limited. Within the last 2 years, I gracefully accepted a new
challenge; teaching in a middle class community. This has been a
breath of fresh air for me. This challenge has recharged me
personally. I have had to make several adjustments in my teaching
style and methods of social interaction. But, I keep in mind, that
there is no progress, without change!

My daily mantra is...."If I can just reach one, then I must teach
one.
The others that I along the way, make this journey worthwhile...."

(I AM HOPING THAT I'M DOING THIS RIGHT!!!!)

Hi all!

My name is Meredith Blunda. I grew up right outside of Washington, DC
over the bridge in Arlington, VA. This is my second year working in
the classroom - last year as a Teaching Fellow in a DC charter school,
and this year I am a 1st Grade English Assistant Teacher. I work at
Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School, which is a Chinese Immersion
school, so the kids are learning to speak Chinese in addition to
learning all the normal DC standards. It adds a whole new challenge to
teaching, and addressing special education needs (which I'm sure I'll
address this semester)...but it's fun! I am in the process of becoming
a lead teacher there next year, hopefully in 1st grade again.

I am super excited for this course, as I feel like I have so much to
learn. We have several students with IEPs or going through the
evaluation process, and I always feel like I should be doing more to
help them (and all the students in my class). In my school model, we
only see each class every other day (they switch between English and
Chinese every other day) so it adds an extra hurdle in getting
students the services they need. They have half the time that other
students in DC do to learn how to read, write, etc in English. Lots of
pressure! So anything and everything I can learn this semester - bring
it on :)

Can't wait!

Hey There!

My name is Katie Anderson. I grew up in New Hampshire, but have been
in the DC area for the past 7 years or so. For the past 5 years
(which makes up most of my teaching experience) I have been teaching
middle school math (primarily 6th graders) in low income and
disadvantaged neighborhoods/communities. This past school year I made
a big switch! I am now teaching in an elementary school, in a middle
to upper class neighborhood (still a DC public school, but a huge
change!). I was a little apprehensive at first, of how I would like
teaching in an elementary school--but I love it! Kids are kids, and
they are a joy to work with and learn with and from!

I am really excited about this class--specifically I am hoping to
learn more about specific learning and emotional disabilities in hopes
to better serve my special education population. I feel if I really
understand where my students are coming from and where their
disabilities stem from, I will do a better job of differentiating my
instruction to meet their needs and hopefully serve them better. I
am also excited about learning more about the whole special education
process--how kids are placed into special education, what criterion
needs to be met, how students are labeled with having a learning
disability or being ed etc.

I am sure this course will enrich my mind with lots of new knowledge
and perspectives about special education :)!

Hi!

My name is Ellie Tiehen and I am from Omaha, NE. I have lived her for
two years now. I currently teach 4th grade at Two Rivers Public
Charter School.
I am excited for this course because I have had many experiences with
exceptional individuals including family and students. Beginning when
I was 12 years old I volunteered at a recreational therapy camp for
individuals with special needs and eventually became staff. That
experience helped me learn understanding and patience at an early age
for individuals with special needs. It also helped me to know the
value and potential that every person possesses. I am hoping to learn
more about individuals with mental illness and behavior disorders and
how to help these students in the classroom. I believe in
incorporating art into the classroom, and hope to learn more ways to
access children with special needs through the arts. I'm looking
forward to the readings and discussions!

I have just finished Pearl S. Buck's book and appreciate her struggle
and the perspective she provided as a mother of a daughter with an
intellectual disability.

Thanks,
Ellie

Greetings! This is colson. I think I have figured this out. I teach
second grade at Hyde leadership PCS. I love this group of students!
They do not know this yet. I hope to gain additional insight into how
to work with the students placed in our inclusion program. I look
forward to learning so many strategies. Ellie has agreed to provide
the technical support for me. There is hope!
Much respect,
colson

Hello Friends!

My name is Drew Smith and I am a 4th grade reading/social studies
teacher at Tubman Elementary in Columbia Heights. This is my 2nd
year
teaching and I am continuing to enjoy the daily challenges and
laughs.
From this class, I am hoping to gain a better understanding of where
my special education students are coming from. I am beginning to
feel
comfortable with my teaching practices, but I truly believe the
better
I understand about a student's background and thought process, the
better I will be able to reach them.

Happy New Year!

Drew

PS - I just realized I posted this in the wrong spot the first time!

Hi everyone! My name is Stephanie after a semester off, I am finally a new excited mother and back in school!

I am a second grade teacher at Miner Elementary School. This is my 2nd year teaching but I have only been teaching for the last year and a half. During my experiences teaching I have students in my class who had generalized learning disabilities and who were deemed emotionally disturbed. I have worked closely with the Student Health Team at my school and have been eager to learn more about both ED and LD.
During this class, I hope to learn more about the various symptoms of LD and ED. One of my biggest challenges is determining whether or not a child has a disability or just lack the exposure of certain skills. I think that by learning the signs of certain disorders then I can properly help my students without either denying them services and/or over classifying them.
Looking forward to learning from all of you!
