I can't tell who owns the group.  I think only the owner(s) can invite new people to join.  And it's certainly a good time to issue a broad invitation to new members.  There are a lot of new residents and old residents who have become more active in Watertown affairs who might be interested.
Please let the group know if you are an owner, and whether you are up for owning the group going forward.
thx
Nancy

See Beth Zwick’s message (at the end of the chain that Rick responded to).  She confirmed that the owner/moderator of the group is the Watertown Community Foundation.  She gave the names and email address that we could approach with questions.

Here is Beth's message in case anyone missed it: (Beth, it was great to hear from you - you miss you!)

Hello former neighbors!

Yes, the Watertown Community Foundation is the owner/moderator of this
group. They should have the password to manage it.

You could start by reaching out to *in...@watertownfoundation.org
<in...@watertownfoundation.org>*. As many of you know, Jan Singer is
Executive Director and the Board Co-Presidents are David Siegel and Darshna
Varia. I believe Darshna may know something about this group.

All the best,
Beth Zwick

Thanks Ernesta! and Beth!
I will be in contact with them.  But I cannot take on owning this group, unfortunately.
So we will need a volunteer or two to step up.

Earlier in this thread Beth Zwick said that the Watertown Community Foundation “owns” the group and someone there might have the password, etc. Has anyone knocked on that door lately to inquire?

Oops I see Nancy’s already on the case! Thank you, Nancy.  Sorry for my unnecessary post.

I believed I responded to this earlier.  Jan Singer, Director of the Community Foundation, has no knowledge of any role with FOTWR or any password.  That being the case, are there any other possibilities?

Given that the password is lost and therefore control of the Google Group, we will abandon this one and switch to Outlook:   friendsofthewat...@groups.outlook.com

Thank you Sarah Ryan for setting this up.  Anyone who has not already joined should do so.

If we were in the old group do we have to join again?

Isn't that shutting out people who don't use Outlook?

And how does one join?  Is there a web site?  I responded to the mail link below and was told you have to be a member to join - Catch 22.  John Hawes

I’m trying to figure out Outlook groups too, so the following is only my amateur understanding so far. It seems that anyone can us Outlook.com, even if you don’t use Outlook for your mail. Probably even if you use an Apple device, but I haven’t tried that myself. On your web browser, you go to https://outlook.live.com/owa/ and either create a free account or … I don’t know if it’s anything different if you have already have a Microsoft account or use the Outlook program or app on your device. Then you set up an account (create user name, password, then they ask for your name and date of birth – they say it’s so “inappropriate content” can be filtered from minors). Then log in. But to join an Outlook group (see https://support.office.live.com/en-us/f1/topic/join-or-leave-an-outlook-com-group-675cc8c7-f110-4948-856f-23e7e43aebc0?NS=OLWACB&Version=16) you have to be invited by the owner or a member of the group. That page also says how to leave a group.

I’m interested in the experience of others using Outlook.com. We should get comfortable with this before the FOTWR google group is abandoned.

Is it certain we need to make this change? Are we sure there's no way to keep the fotwr group? It is still working fine now.

The problem is that we haven't found anyone who has administrative access to the account. You need an administrator to add new people and take care of other housekeeping matters. So although it works fine for now, it can't really continue in the long run without an administrator. I don't know if there's any way to appeal to google to assign a new administrator if we find a volunteer. I did a little web searching to see if there's any way to take control of an abandoned group like this and wasn't able to find anything.

There's a chance Michael Schade might have the password to the Google Group, I'm not sure how to reach him.  I presume he was the administrator ages ago, it might have passed to his successor at the Watertown Foundation but it isn't with the current one.

Has anyone reached out to Mike Schade with this question?  (Thank you Susan for finding his email address!)  David Jay, you suggested he might be helpful...?
