Hello Friends,
We had such a great turnout for our meeting in December and the goal is to
continue that enthusiasm. I would like to start planning a meeting for the
middle/end of March and wanted to solicit ideas in in terms of what people
would be interested in seeing for the program. I will try my best to get
some interesting speakers or presentations that are relevant to the
communities' interests. Please email me directly any ideas you may have. I
will be in touch soon with a date and time. Thanks! Jennifer

Hi-
I'm new to the group and sorry I this an old issue but my impression is that a huge polluter of the river is stormwater discharge.

Has there been any effort to catalog discharge points and work with the town on reducing impervious surfaces or incentivizing pervious ones?

Monitoring the flows at these points might be a way to gauge our impact on the issue over time.

Aaron, you are right about the stormwater runoff.  Two groups, the town's Stormwater Advisory Committee and the Environmental Task Force of WCES  (Watertown Citizens for Environmental Safety) are very interested in those issues.  Please let me know if you are interested in coming to any of our meetings; we would love to have you involved!

Aaron,

The Charles River Watershed Association runs a volunteer water monitoring project. You can read more about it here: http://www.crwa.org/water_quality/monthly/monthly.html

Aaron,

I'm actually the person within Charles River Watershed Association that runs
the Volunteer Monthly Monitoring program. If you would like more information
or are interested in volunteering, please let me know.

Take care,
Elise

Hi, Elise.

Thanks for the note.  I just don't think I can be a volunteer right now.  I've got small children and I am afraid that I can't committ to being out there during storm events.

What I was thinking of as a possible contribution was support with any advocacy at the town government level.  What is happening in Watertown in that regard?

Would also be interested to see a map of the drainage discharge points for the town.  I'm a big visualization guy.

Thanks for the note.  Do you know when are the upcoming meetings for these groups?
I would love to but have to work it into the schedule of 3 kids and 2 working parents.  I will definitely support the work in some way and as I learn more about where to best chip in.

I work for the Federal USDA-NRCS as a GIS specialist for the state of MA so I'm seeing a lot of discussion at work, too.

The talk listed below is part of a conference held March 11 and 12 in Springfield, by the Ecological Landscaping Association. Just thought it might be of interest to FOTWR...Carole

A New Program to Improve MA

Waterways

Alex Murray, MA Department of Transportation

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation

(MassDOT) has launched a new program, the “Impaired Waters Program”, to construct stormwater treatment for highway run-off into

Commonwealth waterways that the EPA has classified as “impaired waters”. Alex Murray will discuss how MassDOT is

implementing this effort statewide, building filtration basins, bio-filtration swales, and other site treatment features, as part of ongoing

road and bridge projects, as well as standalone stormwater retrofits.

Aaron,

My apologies for the delayed response. We apparently had an issue with our email server on February 23d, and all emails that day were routed to a spam folder – so I’m just noticing this now.

As for volunteering, I completely understand if you don’t have the time because of your children to commit to sampling. But just to let you know, our sampling days are pre-scheduled and have nothing to do with storm events. Not sure if that changes your mind or not, but I just thought I’d clarify.

As for town government issues, we don’t have anything we’re specifically lobbying for in Watertown right now, but I can keep you in mind if/when something does come up.

As for a map of drainage discharge points for Watertown, I don’t have a map pre-made right now. So, I’d have to locate and download the data and create the map, which is completely possible, but would definitely take some time (so… I’m not sure if or when I would be able to get to that). If you’re truly interested, it might be worth contacting the Watertown DPW and seeing what kind of stock maps that have on hand.

Sorry again for the delay. Hope this answers your questions.

Take care,

Elise
