Today - November 27th, 2025 - marks the 106th birthday of the Asahi Optical Company - the
manufacturer behind Pentax cameras.
The list of innovations that the company gave the photographic world is beyond impressive - here are
just a few of their 'firsts':
✔️ The first Japanese SLR (the Asahiflex)
✔️ The world's first instant return mirror SLR
✔️ The world's first manufacturer to produce one million SLRs (also, later, the first to reach the
10 million milestone)
✔️ The world's first SLR with TTL automatic-exposure control.
✔️ The world's first through-the-lens autofocus camera.
✔️ The world's first gallium arsenide light meter in an SLR.
✔️ The world's first Super Multi-Coated lenses (Takumar lens series)
✔️ The world's first autofocus medium format SLR camera.
✔️ The world's first digital medium format SLR camera.
A short list, that whilst impressive, barely scratches the surface of their innovation.
To mark the anniversary today's camera from the collection is this Program A from 1984.
