FAQs for the Safaricom Appstar Challenge

Why should developers participate in this challenge?

One of our objectives is to promote and foster local content development by providing them with an opportunity to showcase and publicize their apps. Besides offering a monetary reward, the Appstar competition will provide developers with an opportunity to showcase their skills at a regional level.  The applications will also be hosted on the Safaricom and Vodafone apps stores for use by customers within these networks

Who can participate in the challenge?

This Competition is open to all developers and students wishing to participate in the competition, provided that they are resident in Kenya. Participants younger than 18 years must have a legal guardian to represent them and accept the prize on their behalf should they win the competition.

How long will the challenge run?

The Challenge commences on 6th September 2012.  The registration of applicants will close on 26th October and all application entries must be received by 23.59hr 2nd November 2012.

Can I submit more than one app to the challenge?

Competitors may submit more than one entry/application to the Competition, and each entry/application that is submitted to the Competition may be eligible to win one or more of the prizes. Judging of such submissions will be done independently for each application.

What are the prizes?

Local Prizes

1) Grand Prize Ksh 1,000,000
2) Runners Up Ksh 500,000
3) Category Winner Ksh 100,000

What is the challenge application Process?

Developers/Applicants will go through the following process to submit their applications. A portal has been provided for this purpose. This can be accessed through SafaricomAppstar.com

Registration
Developers will be required to fill in the registration form

Build
Process where developers will develop their apps

Publish

Process of publishing the app to Vodafone app stores

Submission

The process of submitting applications for participation in the competition

What mobile platforms are supported?

The following platforms are supported

1) Symbian
2) Java
3) Android
4) Blackberry

How will you select winners?

Selection of the competition winners shall take place in a two stage process: Local and International Competition


All qualifying entries will be evaluated from 3rd November to 16th November, 2012 by a jury, consisting of representatives selected by Safaricom.

The Jury will select 6 winning entries one from each category

From the selected 6 category winning entries, the Jury will then select the top 3 entries for the local grand prizes and the first 2 entries will qualify to compete in the International Round of this competition.

The international round takes place in December in South Africa with the Winner and Runner up eligible to compete for the international prizes.

Who will meet the cost of Travel for the international competition?

For the international finalists Safaricom will meet the travelling and accommodation costs for the Grand and Runner Up Prize winner. Safaricom will only meet the expenses of one person in per category

What will be the judging criteria?

Safaricom has developed an internal point-based judging matrix that will be shared with the judges. The criteria will be based but not limited to the following;

1) Functionality
2) Originality of the concept.
3) Does it meet the objectives?
4) Significance and Local Impact
5) Conformity to appropriate standards and regulatory codes of practice.

Who will be the Judges?

The final list of judges will be communicated at a later forum. We will draw our list of judges from the following pool

1) Respected Industry Experts
2) Academia
3) Safaricom

Can I submit applications that have won in other competitors or those that have been uploaded to other appstores?

The above apps are not eligible to participate in this challenge

Who will own the intellectual property for my apps submitted to the challenge?

The developer will own the Intellectual property for the app

What is the process of uploading my app to the Safaricom Appstore?

This will be communicated at a later stage

What business model will Safaricom support once my app is uploaded on the app store?

Safaricom shall enter into a commercial agreement with the app developer before the apps can be uploaded to the Safaricom apptore. 

Our guiding principle will be to provide a share agreement that is in favor of the developer where revenue sharing is applicable.

Who will determine the pricing for the apps?

Developers will be free to price their applications based on the target market and business model

What support will Safaricom provide developers during the challenge?
