What an awesome event the conference turned out to be. I have heard great things about the conference from both the seasoned FOSS4G veterans and people who were attending their first FOSS4G event.
I want to thank ALL of you for everything that you did to make the conference what it was. This conference would not have been successful, or have even happened, without the hard work and contributions from all of you.
The Location Committee did a great job picking the venues for both the conference and the event at the Mill City Museum. The online and on-site registration went smoothly. Thanks also to the people who identified potential sponsors, made initial contacts, made follow up contacts, and completed the deals. We ended up with a very respectable list of sponsoring organizations, and we exceeded our sponsorship goal by over 10%!! Many of the sponsors and dollars were hard won. There were several people who worked hard on this, but I want to especially thank Paul Ramirez for the time and energy that he put into securing sponsors.
I heard very positive remarks about the keynote speakers and the concurrent session presentations. Thanks to the Program Committee and everyone else who recruited speakers, voted on and classified abstracts, and promoted the conference. The FOSS4G brand has been renewed again for another year.
Thank you to Kari Geurts, who coordinated workshop instructors and acted as our liaison to the MN GIS/LIS Workshop Committee. Without Kari, we would not have had workshops. Thank you Len Kne for coordinating the student scholarships and promoting the conference to educators. I loved seeing all of the students and professors there.
Thanks, of course, to David Bitner for his idea of bringing the conference to Minnesota and all of the work that he did to make it a success.
As all of you know, it is an understatement to say that the conference took a lot of work to pull together. I can honestly say that to me, it has already been repaid. A lot of local colleagues got to see that this community is real and thriving, and they learned that open source geo projects are already at work in the real world, sometimes in mission critical roles, and that they can scale. They also got to feel the 'FOSS4G buzz'.
I got to see some great presentations, had my brain stretched a bit, and I was able to hang out with you and a lot of the others from this awesome open source geo space. I also loved looking around and seeing the conversations going on and observing who was talking to who. It is exciting to see and know that this is where an existing project is being improved, a project is cross pollinated, maybe a deal is struck, or someone is learning something that they can bring back and apply to their work.
Resources invested in a conference and community like this produce returns with a multiplier of 10 or even 100. We have all made an excellent investment. Thank you again for everything that you did to make this conference a success.
David.
