Hi All

I've been in conversation with Esri Education about having them sponsor student volunteers.  We are planning on funding at least three students (depending on registration numbers) - Esri is interested in sponsoring to more students.  We have 20 students who are interested volunteering from 15 different institutions.  

Two questions, how much would it cost to fund two volunteers?  If EB registration was $415 or $830 for two, we could round to $1000.  Second, how would their sponsorship be acknowledged?

I probably should have worded my requests as an up or down vote.  Please vote on the following - I'd like to get word to the volunteer applicants as to their status.  We have 20 students form 15 institutions who are interested volunteering.  

1. Provide funding for three student volunteers based on the current registration counts.

2. Provide Esri Education the opportunity to sponsor two additional students volunteers for $1,000.  Esri already has their logo on the website, but they should get separate recognition by conference chair in the opening plenary for sponsoring student volunteers.  Also create name badge ribbon (or acknowledgement on name tag) that they are the "Esri Sponsored Volunteer".

The ribbon seems kind of excessive. 

It would likely be quite a conversation starter for the students involved though ; /

Ok, so the Esri student sponsorship went over like a lead balloon.  I'm fine dropping that, tomorrow I will randomly draw three students volunteers as we originally discussed.

Len has interpreted our silence on this proposal as a rejection.  I have noticed that this group often objects noisily, but agrees fairly quietly. 

I think that getting students to this conference is very valuable, so I want to make sure that we have an explicit recommendation from our committees on this. 

To me, if ESRI is willing to provide funding for two additional students in exchange for recognition in the program and verbal acknowledgement in the plenaries, I would support it.  (No ESRI-specific sponsorship ribbons for the students.) 

We have 20 students who want to come and learn about open source geo, I would like to be able to support as many of them as possible.

Please provide input on this as soon as possible.  At a minimum, +1 /0 /-1

A quick update on students...

Three student volunteers are confirmed.  They are from UC Santa Barbara, Chippewa Valley Tech College (Wisconsin), and UMN. Volunteer positions were selected by random drawing. To ensure volunteer opportunities are spread across institutions, only one person from each college or university will be selected until all institutions are represented by one student. For institutions with multiple campuses, each campus will be allowed one student.

I've asked Esri Education if they would sponsor 2 students for $1,000 and waiting their response.  I am sending an email to students on the volunteer waitlist with an update of where we are at.  Students not receiving a volunteer postion will be able to register at the early bird rate.
