Hi All

We are looking at having 1-2 virtual presenters for the portal panel - see the mail chain below details about why.  Before i go looking for a technical solution to make this happen, I wanted to check with the LOC to see if there is already a solution in place.  I'm especially interested to here from the people working with the Marriott to get a sense as to what resources they might have.

Thanks

Len

Len,

I think that it would be great to get Doug there virtually.  He would be a very credible person to talk about CKAN and the Feds.  Having CKAN well represented is important to me.

I don't know what technology we have available.  There will be a projector and an ethernet connection.  I assume that we will also have microphones for all (or at least a shared on.)

I fully support being creative.  We could likely pull him in on a video conference using something like VidYo.  That is what we use at work and it is pretty slick.  http://www.vidyo.com/  I know that there are others out there.  That would make it as easy as having a laptop and a web cam connected and putting it up on the screen.

Loc is the likely place to start.

David.

Hi David and David

I'm starting with you guys, please let me know if I should send this to the entire LOC for consideration.  We are getting down to the wire with the portal panel and not having good luck getting a representative from GeoNetwork and CKAN for the panel.  Here's a link to the panel details - https://docs.google.com/a/umn.edu/document/d/1HOQRPqVnd9apiQ267G_t5ZxV8Zj2bynvzYihMahlUgE/edit

Way back in the planning process we decided not to allow virtual presentations, but this option is looking like the best we have for completing the panel.  Doug Nebert (USGS) can represent CKAN virtually.  My question is if there has been any talk about technologies to  allow virtual participation via one of the many technologies available.  I'm not sure how big the room (Ballroom 1) is and if there will be amplification of participants to begin with.  Any guidance you can offer will help us to get the panel set.

Thanks

Len

We could do similar with GeoNetwork, with Jim K as backup or maybe presenter of some part, and Jeroen online?

I agree on virtual, maybe with the Arizona folks on tap as backup?

I just talked with Doug and he will not be able to make it.  He mentioned one other person for EROS data center (Michelle Anthony  who might be able to speak to CKAN, but she is not signed up for the conference.  I mentioned Arizona to him and thought that could be ok, although he thought their implementation of CKAN is still in the works.

I asked if he would be able to participate calling into the conference and he sounded interested.  He wished the sessions were being broadcasted/recorded for those who cannot make it.

I'm leaning towards Doug Nebert or someone from OKF virtually if we can get the technology worked out...

I'll forward you the exchange that David Fawcett and I had with OKF.
I agree, I'd rather have a knowledgable virtual presentation than a borderline in-person...
That said, Doug Nebert or the Arizona folks are still good candidates for CKAN...?

Hi Nancy

My day has not gone anything according to plan as I am just now getting to my desk...

Thanks for suggesting the Esri fix with Andrew bouncing between sessions, that could work if Esri can't find another person to participate.

Has anyone tried contacting Open Knowledge Foundation (OKF) to see if they could speak for CKAN?  They are the developers after all.  I know they are in Europe and not likely to attend, but way back in the early planning stages of the conference there was some discussion about the support of virtual presentations.  In general it was decided to discourage this so people would attend the conference, but we are at a point now with the portal panel that have a virtual panel member might be the best solution.  This would allow someone from OKF to participate for CKAN.  What do you think?

Thanks Nancy, I'll try Doug first tomorrow and then people from Arizona.

Hi, Len - here's some really likely candidates for CKAN that it would be great if you could contact - I didn't hear anything back from this e-mail, you might have to resort to phone? Doug Nebert would still be first choice, I think...

Hello -
We are organizing a "State of the Portals" panel at the 2013 FOSS4G-NA Conference, and are assembling representatives from OpenGeoPortal, GeoNode, ESRI, and GeoNetwork, as well as Dr. Carl Reed from OGC. We would really like to have a CKAN representative. Since you are presenting on "An Open Source Stack for the National Geothermal Data System" which uses CKAN, would it be possible for one of you to fill this role?

I'm afraid we're getting down to the wire on finalizing the program, so if you could let us know soon that would be helpful.
Thanks -
Nancy Read, SharedGeo

I'm out of town today let's touch base tomorrow. Only resources in rooms are mic and projector. Anything else you'll need to find.
