Online Contemporay Nepali Dictionary Launched!

Dear all,

It gives me a great pleasure to inform that Online version of Contemporary Nepali Dictionary was launched on 11th Dec, 2007 by Bhasha Sanchar Project, Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya. To our knowledge this is the first corpus-based dictionary in the South-Asia region. Any members interested can visit the site www.nepalisabdakos.com to check out the dictionary. Any suggestions or feedbacks regarding the interface or features of dictionary would be highly appreciated.

Also please visit the site www.bhashasanchar.org to check more outputs of the project, most of which are open source.

Really good work there.I liked the  use of javascript to enable the keyboard to type and the suggestion menu...:) Are there any plans to use this in Nepalinux, or perhaps in other programs?

ya really good work..

i especially liked the javascript thingy which allows u to type in nepali without installing the actual keyboard layout in ur computer..

would be gr8 if u guys also release an api or similar stuff to access the dictionary through external tool..

anyways, gr8 work.. really useful..

Very good. I like the suggestions that it gives.

I found some problems
=> It shows the romanised keyboard even if you try to have traditional keyboard.
=> When we press shift in the keyboard, the keyboard graphics wont change. You need to click shift to show the character.

I'd like to second that! It's a great thing to have for small applications and for OLPC if an API is released.

Thank you, the response of overwhelming. Well, there are lot of future possibilities which of course includes including it in Nepalinux or rather make a stand alone application for any platform. This dictionary will be continuously updated so more entries will be added in future.

For specific purpose, we will right now stack all the requests and will get to it one by one. Or, we may require some help from the members in this group.

Please keep on giving feedbacks and we will do the best to serve the purpose of making it a better online dictionary.

I always remember DB and VJ arguing and quarrelling sitting on either side of me (when i was in mpp) while coding for dictionary. Finally, hats off to u guys.

Its really good news that we now have much awaited Nepali dictionary with us.  Now we are waiting for the dictionary to be intergated to Nepalinux and hope to get dictionary package for any other distro as well.

dictionary :). Yes, the long awaited on-line dictionary is available
and we're finally getting ample of time to think on making more this
dictionary more user-friendly. We are still working on on-line version
to make it even more useful. We're integrating many other useful
features which we're planning to make it available as soon as
possible.

We have two different softwares: one to build dictionary which is
mainly for lexicographers and editors, and other one is online version
for the end-users. We're rigorously working on producing
documentation, user manual and whatever necessary to make it available
as open source product :). Keep the faith guys! As we are still
working on documentation and all other stuffs, schedules are very
hectic these days :(. We'll think about providing clean source code
and everything in the near future.

And finally, we're also planning to produce it as a desktop
application which will be greatly useful to those who don't have
internet connections. Other possibility could be is to produce this
dictionary in the printed form.

Congratulation to our dedicated, supportive and friendly project
manager Ms. Srishtee Gurung, my colleague Vijay Kumar Shrestha for
his honesty and continuous dedication on developing this dictionary,
our director Mr. Amar Gurung for his continuous support all the way
long (Thanks a ton for his inspirations, motivations and being so
friendly.), and all the senior linugists team of T.U. and all team
members of BhashaSanchar who has given their blood,‭ ‬sweat,‭ ‬and
tears to this dictionary, and all the office colleagues for their kind
and continuous support all the way long. Ah ! I forgot to congratulate
myself hehe. I've also given my best to develop this dictionary hehe.
Trust me :) Actually, all of us in the team has given their blood,‭
‬sweat,‭ ‬and tears honestly.


The story

The beginning of the turning point

We yearned for perfection with labyrinthine schemes in our hand. Our
plans were so big and hopes were so high. Our motto 'Never say die'
shoved to continue the journey while despaired thoughts clouded the
road ahead. Many colleagues relinquished and many others arrived to
fill that same empty space. In the high and dry situations, there was
only me in the whirls of turmoils. I still held my my head high and
stood tall to face the storm. I honestly kept my commitments alive.
Finally sometimes later, that vacant space was occupied for long run
by an honest fellow. Those faint hopes bloomed once again. Abiding
passion sticked with us like an obsession. We desired no personal
benefits yet we worked night and day just to accomplish this mission.
I must say that was the turning point of our mission.

Ahhhh, I'm tired of writing now.....

Its the great pleasure of all Nepalese that we have our own dictionary
for our own language. A very very big congrat and Love to
DB(Dibyendra) dai and Bijaya and all Bhashasanchar team of MPP for
such wonderful ,venerated and historical national language dictionary.

This dictionary will really embellish our language and culture
specially those who love and support the national language and our
national product. All the best to DB dai, Bijaya and whole team for
the successive release of the dictionary. Your hard effort and

Thanks Akash :-) [i was searching the link]. A big "Thank you" to all the developers of nepali sabdakos :-). A great work of Ajax going there. ;-)

Hello Bhasasanchar Team and all who has worked for nepalisabdakos.com

This is really COOL... now I got a big support in my own project which
will be launching soon. This adds up a big moral support on working on
some stuffs bestowed with the moral attitude towards nation and
nationality. This is not another exaggeration but a true salute
towards what one has done in the field he/she has to be accredited to.
