many windows user have a misconception regarding software...
they judge software in terms of user interface...if the software has aero/eve caching look...they say "the software is awesome" but if it has simple UI they response software as not good..

same incident happened in my class...
one of my friend asked me to show my linux music player and i showed him rhyhtmbox and instantly he replied me "not good"

we have to convince them that judging software in terms of look is a bad practice
definitely user interface is one part of software but not all...there comes other parts of software like process/features/performance etc
vlc has simplest UI but yet is more powerful and better than any other players out there
same stands for chrome, gimp, and other software

lets aware windows user
lets convince them to try linux once
FOSS rocks

It's not a surprise a general user acts like you said. But what I have experienced is even more worst. Technical students in our famous universities study about *NIX in books, but don't ever use it. Some of them have installed Linux in their computers, but with multiple entries in bootloader because eventually they have to switch back to windows. Even the Core Subject teachers/lecturers/professors like Operating Systems, Distributed System, Data Structures etc in our educational institutions don't like to use *NIX operating systems. They would rather buy expensive licenses for proprietary software for labs, but won't switch to open-source alternatives. They teach you semaphores, dead-locks, UNIX filesystems, processes, Kernel Internals, data structures etc etc but they would never encourage you to use *NIX because they themselves don't know how to use and neither they want to learn. How on earth a student learns such core things of OS and Programming without learning to code in *NIX? We start learning C programming with a buggy program with IDE called "Turbo C". Most of students of CS/IT pass out their bachelors without even knowing what is GCC, G++, GDB etc.
Lets start change from us "Fossians". I am sure most the fossians here also have dual OSes installed in their computers. Remove the Windows operating systems just at once if you have guts. You might find it hard at first, but I'm sure once you get along with it, you will never want to switch back to Windows. You will never need any proprietary software again unless you are hard-core gamer. OS like Ubuntu has made it even simpler for beginners. No matter who you are, a general user, system administrator or a developer, it is like a deep sea where the depth increase with distance.

Really true! Any ways here are some FACTS!

Cons!
1. C/C++ means writing code in Borland/Turbo complier (1992 released)
2. You need Java to write GUI.
3. Come on send me file in *.doc, *docx
4. where is the function to swap 2 nos!
5. Ah! 12.10 alpha! it sucks! (hope they known whats alpha)
6. Where is my C, D, E drives!
7. I'm writing my OS in JAVA.
8. PenDrive, PenDisk!
9. Formating my computer!

Pros!
1. GCC is just not only C its compiler Collection!
2. "$ man 3 printf" show printf() description
3. Object files .. no code to you!
4. I get it GNOME/KDE/XCFE/... are just DE
5. my devices are in /dev
6. Ah! nice things are there called gitHub and Sourceforge!
7. I'm setting up DC++, IRC, ssh, and Apache Server in LAN!
8. WINE is not Emulator! i don't really need it!

I like linux and would gladly migrate to it but sometimes it still has some lackings... I dual boot ubuntu and windows 7 and am in ubuntu most of the times but for some tasks i have to open windows once in a while.. Also unlike what everyone says, i've experienced that windows 7 is much more stable than ubuntu. Many times ot has happened to me that when I have opened the comp for a long time Unity starts feeezing. I have to go to terminal

Bugs are a part of software. No software in the world can be perfect. In case of FOSS, this is how software gets mature. Bugs are reported by people like us, and a large pool of enthusiastic developers are willing to debug them. So you can help to make this software mature by reporting bugs to proper place.
Talking about your problem, unity is a new Graphical Interface developed by Ubuntu. If you like adventure, you can try other interfaces like KDE, Gnome, xfce. All of them have some pros and cons.

mingw is there for gcc there are others too.

> 2. You need Java to write GUI.
qt, wxWidgets(wxDevC++ for drag and drop ), ... for c++, python...

> 7. I'm writing my OS in JAVA.
(there must be sth for c/c++) :D

and one more pros for me (hybrid graphics problem)
Nvidia officially support Optimum for Windows only
Though, luckly there is bumblebee for linux too
i just solved my heating and battery life problem using Bumblebee 3.0
in OpenSUSE

it depends on what u r using? me using windows and some times i use LINUX like Debian for change. the work i do in windows can be done in LINUX too. so there should not b any conflict between windows and LINUX. if windows started charging then sure every1 tries to use LINUX....

I also find many such problems, and the reason I use linux is also because I like to find the solution to those problems. To conclude, I can migrate to linux but can not let go of windows completly (yet).

I used to have windows free computer, but now I have dualboot windows
7 with ubuntu... Just to play Counter Strike and San Andreas Multi
Player with ClassMates!!! I dont even have any thing extra installed
in it except for Mozilla Firefox, that too just to find some mods &
tricks for those games!!! :D :D

Everything else seems much easier to do in Linux. If you get stuck
with any problems then just fire up the terminal and feel like God
(with some help from Google) !!! :D

I totally agree with Suraj Neupane, bugs are part of softwares. In
windows you don't care much about the program errors as you are used
to seeing "The xxxxx has stopped working, windows is trying to find
the solutions blah blah blah Send Error Report blah blah blah Don't
Send...", since your childhood...

I think the user interface gives an user the 'first impression' of a
software. But a software shouldnt be judged just by the
user_interface and without exploring the inner
details ,functionalities and performance . "DONT JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS
COVER" // " DONT JUDGE A SOFTWARE BY ITS INTERFACE"

Ps:: Your situation might have been worse if your friend had asked you
to show him your best text editor and you showed him VI. haha :)

yup another best example is "vi"...it is the most simplest IDE, and yet most lightest/fastest/powerful IDE
