Hi All,

Hope everyone is having a nice time. As most of you may know, Allen Tuladhar - Country Director of MIC Nepal recently asked FOSS Nepal Community to join them as an co-organizer of one of their event Dev Tech Day V4.0 in the Twitter discussion started by Amit Shrestha, Student of NIST and one of the FOSS Nepal PoC. Yesterday we received and official request email from him with an events details and information.

Please find the email content here form the docs and please do share your views. What are your thoughts, what can be the FOSS Nepal Community next steps and reply for this mail etc etc. Personally, I am in total confused and unable to underline where all this came from. Just don't want this to become the pain in my ass.
Do share your views!!

Regards,

Hi Folks,
I personally think there is no harm in being a co-organizer, but lets be sure that we will be able to highlight and use the event as platform to promote FOSS.

Some of the points to be considered:
- Lets demand a speaking opportunity and lets present on why tech giants  like FB, Twitter, Google and even Microsoft contribute to open source platform (I am interested in it :P)
- If there are any competition then we need our representatives as judge as well, so that they don't judge only based on MS technologies used  (in past MS appathons Android apps were disqualified coz they don't use MS techs)
- And yes we'll have to participate in panel discussion as well.
- If possible lets promote SFD in this event as well :P

In short: Let us be aware and exploit this opportunity to promote FOSS :)

Hi Nikesh,
I think Everest said whatever I had in mind. There is no harm in working together. But we should be cautious in every step FOSS Nepal Community is not misused or misled.

Cheers,
Prabin

Hi All,

I too agreed with Everest thoughts. No harm for working together but FOSS core values should be maintained.

Hello FOSSians,

I completely agree with Everest and all others about the idea of using the event to promote FOSS and open source.

Few days ago we had received similar thread in Mozilla Nepal mailing list. Credits to the tweet thread started by Amit as Nikesh mentioned. As a part of Mozilla Nepal community I/we discarded the opportunity/request because in a certain line it says, "contribute a minimum of fifteen (15) participants attending the event." If we at FOSS Nepal are going to going to participate, how are we going to meet the demand. Are we going to mail our volunteers and say that they "must" attend the event? Here at FOSS we don't do that. We are FREE people for a reason (because we love and enjoy FREEdom). If the organizer wants diversity in his event and wants to invite us let us ask him to remove any clauses and let us participate in the FREEly.

P.S. यो मेरो निजी बिचार हो। यदि मेरा अग्रजहरूलाई मैले नचाहिदो कुरा गरेँ जस्तो लाग्यो भने, मलाई सम्झाई बुजाई माफ गरिदिनु होला।

Hello FOSSians,
M$P can take this "whip" contribution but in FOSS Nepal community we are not practicing this.
The line "contribute a minimum of fifteen (15)" is the target sales marketing type else you are not contributing and going against the clause, so you are fired.
Visitors are needed and everyone should try to communicate and make the buzzword that attract them.
Contribution in FOSS Nepal are not calculated by the sum of members or visitors I made, its the belief in FOSS philosophy and dedication towards community to serve with the best way I admire where community can support or dislike it.

Regards

Thank you everyone for an Feedback’s and Suggestion. I just replied Mr. Allen Tuladar of MIC Nepal, by highlighting FOSS Nepal views of not co-organizing paid events and the busyness created by the ongoing preparation of Software Freedom Day 2016 Kathmandu. Although as you all suggested we can take maximum opportunity from this event to promote Open Source but in the same time the philosophy of Openness doesn't seems matching. So, I had replied "No" for this event and believes this kinds of opportunity of collaboration will come to us time by again in coming future, where we can mark our impact more than today.

I still need some suggestion on, how should we need to react if we receive this kinds of invitation and opportunity in coming future.

Regards,
Nikesh

Hey everyone,
Absolutely agreeing to everybody's views and opinions on why and how we should work together. I have a few things.
1. I think we need to start assigning people for the event like Arjun said. Panel discussion, presentation, other volunteer etc.
2. How can we promote FOSS and to what extent? A few of us needs to sit down with MIC Nepal and discuss about it.
3. We can ask them to remove the 15 people clause and instead offer to promote the event in colleges where Open Source Community is strong. (Being the newly appointed Co-ordinator of Open Source Community myself I can promote the event in my college through Kathmandu University Open Source Community.)
This of course, if everyone is agreeing that we should be part of the Dev Tech Day. :)
Please let me know what you think.

Thank You Sandeep Bro for an feedback but As I already told in the last mail of this thread. I had already replied "NO" to MIC Nepal for this event because I personally believes that, we are still not prepared for this collaboration and lots of members find the requirements unusual. But no worries, We will be surely receiving this kinds of collaboration opportunity in the near future where we can mark our presence with a huge impact.

Meanwhile, there are some preparation ongoing for the celebration of SFD2016, Is there any plan of celebrating SFD in KU this year??

Regards,
Nikesh

Please do share. Thanks
