Dear all,

The FOSS Nepal Community successfully deployed NepaLinux LTSP in on of
the remote school of the Sindhupalanchowk. The project is financially
supported by the Save the children, Norway, and co-ordinated by the
Help Nepal Network and the technical support for NepaLinux is provided
by Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya.

A team of three people me, Subir sir and Prabin were on the trip. The
trip was quite adventures and memorable. The teachers and students
exhilaration on having computers can't be explained in words. We had
9 LTSP clients, 1 server and 2 standalone system altogether 12
machines. The localized educational softwares such gcompris, tuxtype
and the content provided by the Help Nepal Network were really
useful.

Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya has deployed NepaLinux LTSP in 3 of the
schools Dailekh, Dhading and Phulchowki. In near future MPP is
deploying NepaLinux LTSP in huge scale (16 govt. schools) of Nepal
with the financial support from NTA.Similarly Help Nepal Network under
the eLibrary Project deployed LTSP in 4 sites, 3 of the schools in
Sindhupalchowk, Dang and Bhaktapur (Sudal) and one in Teacher's
training Center, Dhulikhel. Soon Help Nepal Network is having another
LTSP deployment in Morang.

A big thanks to save the children,Help Nepal Network and Roshendra
Dai, for providing an opportunity to have NepaLinux in the project.
Also the thanks goes to MPP, for making necessary arrangement to make
the visit official.

Really, LTSP deployment being done by MPP and Help Nepal Nepal Network
is praise worthy. Lets generate and gather support for their future
project.

Lets have a one LTSP project per school and then bind them all in one
network. Lets make this dream a reality.

we will share, a detail report about the project and others
interesting photos after few days.

This is indeed great work Dayaram Ji and the team. Feeling really proud
that the developed technology is slowly getting to the larger and needy
masses. This is what we had dreamt so far. Now the other crucial issue is
the technical support required to promote the usage of technology in the
implemented and to be implemented sites. We would need to work on this to
produce as many readily available efficient support people as possible.

Bal Krishna

Dear all,

I am elaborating the deployment information and my proposal for future deployments

I am glad to inform you all that the recent deployment of NEPALINUX enabled LTSP at Shree Koldong Devi Ma.Vi., Timure, Thumpakhar -8, Sindhupalchowk has been successfully completed. The deployment was the biggest deployment of 9+1 client-server and 2 stand alone PCs with Nepalinux.

Information about the program:
Project Funded by: Save the Children, Norway
Program Coordination: Help Nepal Network
The deploy team: FOSS Nepal Community
Nepalinux Support: Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya
School of Deployment: Shree Koldong Devi Ma.Vi.

Days of deployment/training :
4 (Monday,21st Jan to Thursday, 24th Jan,2008)
Deploy team: Subir B. pradhanang, Dayaram Budhathoki and Prabin Gautam

I propose Nepalinux for all future LTSP Deployment in Nepal because:
  1. Nepalinux has proven to be stable and can hold at least 11 client per server (may be more but 11 is experienced number making other 2 PCs also as client).
  2. People were very happy to see all the applications and overall system in Nepali. They were delighted to see the computer in Nepali.
  3. The easy scim to switch between Nepali / English language for typing was really helpful.
  4. Educational packages like GCompris and KDE packages in Nepalinux were really useful and many teachers and students were very very excited about it.
  5. Teachers found that contents like "wikipedia for schools" included in Nepalinux will be helpful for them as well to prepare lectures for classes.
  6. Nepali Community who may know only Nepali language can now see and feel possibility to access computer.
  7. The Nepaliness in the system makes everyone feel proud sitting in front of the machine.
I think my proposal will be considered while planning for future deployments.

The new version of Nepalinux (that is: version 3.0) is under development and will contain even more utilities, packages and pre installed contents useful schools and community.

I have attached one photo from our deployment. Please have a look.

that's a great work, we still need to grow more on localization not only in OS level, more on local software that meet our local requirements

Great Akash and FOSS Nepal team for two successful deployments. But
that is just job half done, we have to assure that they are in good
condition and people are using it.

But anyway congrats, the hard work has finally paid off.
