For the softwares that are already built I can make an informal list at
bvs.edu.np if you all send me the name of the software and its website.
Somebody else can make it a formal list at some public site.
I know of Jwalanta's products in his website. I have a couple myself,
which I will put up.
So please lets get more info and I will make the list. I saw that Laxmi
wanted to volunteer on this one. So, maybe you and me lets collaborate
where we look into the products that people send us the name and link
and create the list.
Let us make it clear that we want to list all products that we have
made, even the smallest of the smallest ones, to add to the bargaining
power. So don't feel that your product might be small, just send it in.
Remember, drops of water make the ocean and so it is with code. If you
dont believe me please read the book "A Commentary on the Sixth Edition
Unix Operating System" by J.Lions and you will understand how the
smallest of the smallest pieces of code make up a very complex piece of
software.
Also I would like to make a list of possible (and probably very small)
utilities that Nepali people would like to have in their pcs. Maybe we
need to take examples from some of the utilities that nepali use on
their windows pc. Then we can take up the challenge of building them. I
would like to build a few myself.

Nepalinux already is a distro. Nepali Free Software
developers/admins/packagers/translators could work on that instead
perhaps? :-)

Ubuntu/Fedora is another possibility. These distros could be packaged
up in such a manner that all the debs/rpms be included in Nepali
context (software that will be used by Nepali in Nepali language or
some such) with additional helpful nepali codebase.

Pravin bro is suggesting a rather radical idea because it involves
building a distro with software from ground up (read DRY principle).
Right? Using existing distros as base/s install, all the software can
be had easily (obviously packagers, translators and other help will be
needed).

Pushing translation changes to upstream software will be helpful as
distros will include them when they package it. This way, just
choosing a Gnome or KDE or any other desktop environment will
automatically include your translations.

You could still be using Fedora or Debian or any distro of your
choice, while you get the same interface to use.

I concur. Translating packages upstream is definitely one way to go.

However for the packages that are specific to Nepali context, I feel
that inclusion in the Nepalese distro is a better start than going
with a major distros first.

We need a universal compiler written in Nepali itself like those by Indian Supercomputers developers did for Hindi. Actually the compiler does not care which language or font was used to create it. For sake of Nepal we could develop that something our of something Nepali inside Nepalilinx.
Oh Laxmi dai, now I remember the talks that we had about fonts, language: nepali newari..in MPP tea time during Gaurav Shrestha's display of his Arts.

thanks

As I had said before I have started uploading all my old codes for
others to use (if one can find any use for them). In the regard I have
just uploaded first of the codes that I wrote way back (in computer
terms) in 2002. Its a date converter - converts dates from AD to BS and
vice-versa and a bunch of other things.
Its available at http://www.bvs.edu.np/softwares/.
I will comment the code throughout the next 10 days and make it more
usable, but as it is really old and I have not gone back to it in years,
please be patient with me. After this I will upload more codes that I
have written over the years, one by one.
I hope you guys look at them and find something useful.

Can anyone volunteer to port the code in php, register it at github?
An open source library for date conversion would be really useful.

I believe nepali calendar / date conversion has had more than enough implementation but no documented source as to how it works or where the data comes from. In that regards it would be nice to have some proper documentation backed by a source code repository that has codes in variety of languages .net, java, php, python, c, xyz with explanation of its working.

In that regards, is there any nepali date experts in this board? or anyone interested to research more onto this topic?

Btw, I'm looking for a Nepali date api (in php) where i can do

$nepaliDateApi = new NepaliDateApi();
$englishDate = $nepaliDateApi->convertNepaliToEnglish('2066/01/01');
$nepaliDate = $nepaliDateApi->convertEnglishToNepali('2009/12/21');

Best regards

Hi Pravin,
Good work and thanks for sharing the code for your date
converter. Do you mind uploading your code to http://github.com or
Google Code? Also if you don't mind specifying an open source license
for others to use your code would be great!
