Subject: [ANN] Freecell Solver 5.0.0 was Released
To: Freecell Solving Discussions <fc-solve...@yahoogroups.com>
Cc: Shlomi Fish <shl...@gmail.com>

Hi all,

Freecell Solver version 5.0.0 was released and can be downloaded from
its homepage at http://fc-solve.shlomifish.org/ . Freecell Solver is a reusable
and open-source (MIT/Expat-licensed) library, written in portable C11 with some
GCCisms (32-bit/64-bit, UNIX/Linux and MS Windows), that can automatically
solve the Solitaire game Freecell and some similar Solitaire variants.

The Freecell Solver distribution also includes some standalone command-line
programs that make use of the library. Freecell Solver has a large amount
of features, supports many different run-time heuristics that may yield
different solutions, is a fast solver, and supports the largest number of
Solitaire variants of all other solvers of its kind.

The new release has some new features, some hopefully minor breakages and some
cleanups. More information can be found in the NEWS.asciidoc / NEWS.html
( http://fc-solve.shlomifish.org/docs/distro/NEWS.html ), quoted below.

Regards,

        — Shlomi Fish

Version 5.0.0: (27-Oct-2018)
----------------------------

1. *Breaking change*: made the userland headers +fcs_user.h+, +fcs_cl.h+, etc.
includable only as +#include <freecell-solver/fcs_cl.h>+. The API and ABI
should otherwise remain the same.

2. Add the gen-multiple-pysol-layouts executable to generate several numbered
deals as separate files.

3. Added the experimental fc-solve-multi solver to solve several files in
one go (not installed by default).

4. Rename the AsciiDoc documents from +\*.txt+ to +\*.asciidoc+, in order to
please GitHub/etc. ; updated them and fixed some formatting.

Shlomi,
What is the idea behind solving the freecell programmatically?

With best wishes,
Kristjan Robam

If by "idea" you mean "motivation" or "purpose", then see:

If you mean "technique" or "algorithm" then see:

Hope that helps. "It's a FAQ, jack!"

I see. You may opt to study the source of my solvers or some alternative FOSS ones:

I suspect a basic freecell solver can be written by a competent enough programmer in a few days, but it may not be able to handle a large percentage of game layouts quickly enough and may lack many features.

Ah, then I believe libfreecell-solver (part of https://fc-solve.shlomifish.org/ ) is the fastest released solver todate for most 8 cols+4 freecells deals.

Some unreleased solvers that may be faster are:

1. Danny A. Jones's solver.

2. Bill Raymond's solver

But they were not released in either source or binary forms.

Anyway, different heuristics may perform better for different deals.

Also see:

Note that a fellow software dev who is a fan of freecell and tried to study fc-solve's code complained that it was "optimised to death" which hampered her ability to understand it. And that was around year 2003, and since then the code has been optimised even more and made more complex (and likely become less readable for most programmers).

ah, I see. Well, it is a common problem.

That sounds cool..... To be honest, I have experienced the same thing.
Even when I look at my optimized codes, then after a long time seeing it, it confuses me.

Yeah, the google is growing so big that the owners are starting to lose track of their codes.
It is like the problem, that you can't use web skype for firefox. Newer things are only available on "their" platforms.

Some of them at least - but yes. Freecell Solver is older than my oldest cousins' child who was born after 2001. OTOH, as part of my work on freecell, I collaborated with the late Adrian Ettlinger ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adrian_Ettlinger ; https://github.com/shlomif/Adrian-Ettlinger-Emails-Collection ) who had started programming several decades before I was born (although his work on freecell came much later).

Yes. There is this essay by Joel about that: https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2008/03/17/martian-headsets/ .

To tell the truth, freecell is my favourite computer card game.
Never thinked about it, that it should have be solved with a solver, before I met you on the internet.
I will take a look, when I have time.

Ah. What will make your programming language worth using instead of the existing competition?

I found this humourous feature [not by me] funny: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProgrammingLanguages/comments/7mcsx3/programming_language_checklist/ . And more seriously I wrote a crossover essay where I mentioned some reservations from architecture astronautics: https://www.shlomifish.org/humour/fortunes/show.cgi?id=shlomif-about-how-to-achieve-world-domination .

Note that you shouldn't be completely discouraged: there is still room for innovation in prog langs.

Anyway, I've written some DSLs such as Test-Count : https://metacpan.org/pod/Test::Count and been thinking of creating an improved C preprocessor: https://www.shlomifish.org/philosophy/ideas/#nsbcpp .

Yeah, could be, but I have never needed it. When game seems unsolvable, then I choose "New game".

Ah. What will make your programming language worth using instead of the existing competition?

I have some good ideas.

Well, I am not interested as long as you do not tell me (and in public) what this language's "secret sauce" (see https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/secret%20sauce ) is, what will make it superior, and why I should consider contributing to it. There is such a thing as a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pig_in_a_poke (or what we call in hebrew "a cat in the sack".) and I don't want my future work to be tainted by proprietary knowledge. A friend once shared an idea with me and told me that in a  true open source fashion, I'd be able to implement it before him or share it. That's what I want.

With regards,
Kristjan Robam

With best regards,

Hi Kristjan!

I don't understand what you mean by saying that the idea "stays up".
