Hey,
Find detailed installation instructions of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS here.
PS: Always be careful at the partitioning step. It can cause data losses and partition once created cannot be easily undone.

What about the 297 MB of "Updates" Ubuntu asks for just after
installing? I thought 10.04 released recently so shouldn't need so
many updates.

10.04 is not recently released.. things move pretty fast in ubuntu development ... 10.10 will soon be out sometime in october.. --
