How on earth can we get A/V codecs without an active internet
connection?

BTW I'm running a 32-bit OS and I even have .deb packages (for Ubuntu
9) but they wont get installed.

P.S Don't be surprised.

hi

  1. you CANNOT install the A/V codecs without an internet connection. On a side-note if you want to know why they don't come pre-bundled with the OS, it's because the codecs are proprietary and it's illegal for Cannonical to ship them free with Ubuntu.
  2. Debain packages (.deb) should ideally work out of the box irrespective of he Ubuntu release and yes, they do as a matter of fact. If your's doesn't, then ensure that Debian package is taken from a reliable source (like Ubuntu's official repositories through Synaptic Package Manager (in System > Adminstration), DC downloads of Debains are at times unreliable and/or broken. Also ensure that the Debian package is meant for i686  32-bit Ubuntu and not an x86 64-bit version.
cheers

PS : I wasn't surprised :)
