Hi,
I installed ubuntu 10.04 some days back, but my gmail and facebook are
not working. It always gives the error "the server at google.com is
taking too long to respond." I installed Google Chrome and Opera also,
but the problem still persists.

All the other sites open without the slightest of problem. Please
suggest something to resolve this.

Thanks,

Hina.

I am assuming you have already done this but try and check if the proxy settings are correct.
You can go to System->preferences->network proxy and set the proxy there, be sure to click the "Apply System Wide" button towards the bottom left hand corner...

Hi,
Also set the proxy for the respective browsers.
Cheers.

System-Wide includes proxy for everything including browsers, terminal, synaptic etc etc :)

hi,
I tried doing the system wide proxy thing, it showed me two dialogue boxes, asking my password in each, then did nothing. And, well.. the problem is unresolved yet..

and i also found out that its not just gmail and fb, i cant login to google accounts too.

thanks,

Hina.

Hello!

You said you cannot 'login' to these services. But can you just use google?
If yes, them maybe the problem is only with accessing https.
To confirm, try to open this:

https://encrypted.google.com/

If you encounter the same problem, then you might have setup your http
proxy correctly, but not the https proxy (or secure http proxy).
In the proxy setup page (for your system, and browser), put in the bits
proxy in the https (or secure http) box too.

Please reply if this worked, or if the https page mentioned above
opened, but you still cannot login.

If you can open just Google and not most of the other sites, then you might have set your proxy incorrectly. So first confirm that and if that is so and putting in the correct proxy doesn't work as well, then IPC has blocked your room-port for accessing wrong proxy. You would need to contact them.

Please reply back with what works.

Hey all,

the problem was indeed with the secured proxy, as i could not open the site https://encrypted.google.com. So as Srijan said, i changed the proxy both in network proxy and firefox settings, and problem is resolved.

Thanks a lot,

Hina Jain.
