Hi FoSL Members,

FoSL recently sent $7,500 in August 2024 to the Mamaka Village Agricultural Project for their ongoing project, working with local farmers. Mamaka is partnering with Farming Out of Poverty, that will provide seed rice and training, allowing them to add 45 new farmers for a total of 135. They will also be adding more solar panels and a flat screen TV to be able to train more farmers. A fish pond will be put in use soon, and 50 bee hives added for honey production.

After receiving an update from RPCV Chris Siegler, who is behind all the successes of this project, we learned that they are currently drilling a well at 160 meters deep (see picture), to provide water year round for our vegetable farm (crops will now be harvested in the rainy and the dry season). Women will no longer have to hand draw water from a hand dug “well” and then carry it to the vegetable beds. The well will use a solar pump system to send the water to an elevated storage tank and it will gravity flow through a series of pipes to faucet across the 2 1/2 acre vegetable plot. They will also be able to use the water for a new tilapia aquaculture pond with continuous water flow through the pond. They are installing enough solar panels and battery storage to provide electricity to the Project office (the building behind the drill rig) for lights, computers and printer, and a big screen tv for YouTube training videos on new ag technology.

Thank you for the update, Chris. And thank you to all our donors so projects like this can be extremely successful!

Take care,
