hi, everyone:

i visited wanbin yesterday (2-hr one-way bus ride from nanjing) and spent about 4 hours with him. as some of you already know, he currently lives in a facility for seniors. he has his own room, along with an "assistant" specifically hired to look after him. the assistant's name is 姚恒龙.his cell phone number is 132-2261-8106. you should be able to reach wanbin through that number as long as 姚 works there in this capacity.

wanbin's in a much better shape, although not quite at the level of my high expectation. he can walk up and down stairways, but with a hunched back and somewhat bent kneas. the assistant and wanbin's family kept saying wanbin was "lazy"=not willing to "dong" . my impression is that those people were "lazy". they don't seem to do anything with him, saying he was unable to do anything. so i asked them for a deck of playing cards. wanbin played the card games brilliantly: he beat me 5 to 2! hope they'll do more with wanbin as promised. another promise was to feed him more often (>3) but lighter per meal (they complained that he'd throw up if eating much=ending up eating not enough).

i spoke english as well as chinese with him. believe it or not, he handled english better than he did chinese! he's apparently lost quiet a bit of momery. that sort of things you will be able to tell when you get a chance to talk with him over the phone.

he expressed thanks to everyone who had helped him out. i asked him to write a few words as a thank-you note. he did. he wrote chinese characters handsomely, although the characters did not add up to a meaningful sentence

he was very courteous. he kept reminding his family members to take me to a restaurant. he took the initiative to walk up to me and give me a bear hug when it was time for me to leave.

i gave the family a check for $7800+ from the donations, and explicitly expressed my hope that the family would send wanbin out for more therapy.

lu jian (wanbin's elder brother's son) already got all the necessary forms and instructions from the u.s. consulate in shanghai to apply for social security benefits on wanbin's behalf. following the instructions, he'll file the application in july.

Hi, Xiwei:

Thank you for updates for Lu Wanbin's condition. Does he has any physical therapy each day or a few times a week? Please tell him and his assistant to let him do exercises: walking, 锟姐播锟斤拷, etc. for certain hours (2 or 3 hours) each day. That may help him to recover. Is there doctors and nurses around in that facility for seniors?
He still cannot feed himself? Who pay for his assistant? His families? from the fund of MN?
