Hi, There:

I'm still trying to build up this group--belatedly. A major difficulty
has been to put all the names in: my name list is longer than already
admitted in the member list, but it is hard to figure out who are
missing...

In any case, please visit

http://way-yin.blogspot.com/search/label/Wanbin

for the latest posts, which include Q-n-A's re Wanbin.

Please write something back to me so I know that I have reached at
least some through this group. Otherwise, I will have to find another
way to reach you and keep you updated.

Cheers.

Xiwei

Xiwei,

Thanks for the effort, couple of things you may consider:

1) work with Lao Cheng to publish what you posted on the HuaxingBao. In talking to friends, poeple are indeed questioning many of the QA's you listed.

2) hope you have settle down on the tickets now.

3) Lao Cheng told me upto yesterday, he has received $11,000 donations by checks. I think we will exceed target soon.

Take care!

Hi, Xiwei and friends,

I saw Lao Lu today and he seems doing well.

To my surprise, he said ni hao (你好) to me clearly. He seems very
hungry and finished a whole bowl of century egg/meat congee (皮蛋肉粥) in
a few minutes. The nurse showed me his writing from the morning and I
can read his name (in Chinese) from it. During my conversation with
the nurse, he stood up and requested paper and pen to write. He wrote
some Chinese words but no particular meaning.

Good to hear that. That means Lu Wanbin gradually recover from his stroke. If he stays in the nursing home for some longer period, he may recover speaking ability. By that time, if he wants to go back, it maybe easier to travel.

thanks, frank, and yi li.

i always feel particularly excited every time hearing him saying something, anything. it gives me hope that his potential is there. for a very long time after my first visit with him in the care center, i held the hope that he'd get better and then he'd be able to travel back and forth between the u.s. and china... that certainly would be anyone's dream scenario. the problem is that all his charts are going the wrong direction.

he does say a word or two, or even 3 or 4, occassionally. those exciting incidences are few and far in between. my observation is that they're becoming less, not more frequently... he does write. in fact, he seems to be trying harder these days--he had writen half a page a week ago when i visited him, although the words were not what i could comprehend. i take it as a good sign, though, because the act of writing itself tells me that he's been trying. that gives me hope and gives me encouragement. i've been encouraging him back.

but i'm also realistic, after so many of hopes of his improvement over time have been dashed. we may be so desperate looking for good signs that we mistake them as the light at the end of the tunnel, when in fact, they may be just random fireflies that happen to be there. we must look at his overall trend and his overall conditions, as i described in my Q-n-A posts on my website.

i see his potentials. to turn the potentials into reality, he will have a chance in china. here, the ones in charge of his affair see no potential in him. and they've acted accordingly, smothering any possibility of the potential becoming reality.

hi, ruzhao:

sorry that i missed this message earlier. please use my hotmail address when my specific attention is required. as responded to your previous message, you're welcome to use any and all of them. i must admit that the articles are not well polished--as i was trying to release them for the weekend. i may do some tinkering here and there, from time to time.

please, you and anyone who reads this message, let me know if other questions you think should be added and addressed.

thanks for the update on the total received as of 3/21. from the internet, as you can see on my website, it's >$7,000. i also have a couple of checks.

people are responding. and wanbin will get his chance.

he obviously knows now that he'll be able to go to china, soon. he doesn't look as depressed anymore. he's been trying hard at practicing hand writing.

i suspect, though, that what zheng feng described his name as his own writing was actually what i had written for him. that was monday, a week ago. he had writen half a page. i looked at it. and then i wrote his name in large strokes on the paper. another possibility is that he succeeded in copying my hand writing. i've seen many times his handwritings over time since the stroke. they never made any sense, except perhaps for a few if i imagined hard enough...

hope he'll be able to push his limits and succeed. what a comfort that will be to all of us.

regards,
xiwei

hi, everyone:

i'll accompany wanbin to china.

i'll get wanbin's documents (medical records, passport, green card, ssn card, court papers) from his legal guardian tomorrow/friday.

when the time comes, his medical team will give him some pre-trip procedures to prepare him for the long trip--you don't want to know what, but wanbin has "signed" off on them.

we'll take nwa, departing at 3:15 pm, 3/30 (monday), from mpls/st paul airport. there will be a 1.5-hr stop-over at tokyo airport. we'll arrive at shanghai pudong airport at 9:40 pm, 3/31, local time (8:40 am here). the folks from his hometown will pick us up from there. i'll spend a night in his hometown, before heading to nanjing where i plan to meet friends in nanjing forestry university, his alta mater and mine.

i'm due back to the states 4/7.

if any of you would like to see wanbin off, please let me know.

in fact, we'd like to have someone volunteer to give us a ride from woodbury to the airport. his health care center promised to get him ready for departure by noon. we should leave close to that time, as even healthy travelers must get going at about 1 pm--quite a bit driving to the airport.

if no taker, tomorrow i'll ask his legal guardian to see whether she'd give us the ride.

she's done a great job, given the circumstances: no one has been paid who has served wanbin all these months since his stroke. some of the bills will be paid eventually when his MA is approved. eventually, that is the hope. thanks to you, wanbin can leave all the mess behind.

with that, we'll achieve the goal of getting him to china, soon. that is more like a commencement, an ending in one sense but a beginning for the long haul. so please keep pushing for more support/donations for him, to ensure that he'll get as much financial security as possible, as further down the road and into the future as possible...

well wishers? volunteers?

best regards.

xiwei

Hi. I'm at a meeting at the moment. I'm sorry that I have been slow in getting my donation in. So it is a fast development, you are leaving this soon. Is this somehow dictated by his conditions? Too bad I will not be able to come to MSP to visit before your departure.

Thank you all. the messages after my wanbin-is-leaving announcement were all directed to me. so i'll respond here, as some of them are of certain general interest to this group.

but do please keep in mind that when your message essentially addresses one person you are encouraged to send it to that person alone, by clicking his/her mail address (as opposed to "reply" which will lead you to the whole group). this group has close to 100 individuals, mostly donors who donated via internet. we don't want to distract/interrupt so many people, for nothing.

skip this paragraph if you don't want to know about the wheelchair issue. i checked with nwa and have ordered wheelchair services and in-flight baby food (so i won't need to carry jars of baby food). with the reservation, all we need to do once we get to the airport is to get off at a curbside, and go to an nwa employee for a wheelchair; a wheelchair will be forthcoming. we may be lucky enough to get an nwa employee right at the curbside or someone may have to walk as far as to the check-in counter for one. so if wanbin and i have a 3rd person, that person or i can go fetch for an employee/wheelchair while the other can stay with wanbin and keep an eye on him. at shanghai pudong airport, we will be allowed to use airline's wheelchair going out of the customs. so we'll be ok, w/o a wheelchair of our own.

suv: doesn't one have to step up to get into an suv (as opposed to easing into a seat in a passenger car)? one thing we cannot count on is that wanbin will be able to climb up or down stairs or the like. in that cautionary sense, a passenger car is preferred to suv. but maybe a"small suv" will be a lesser hurdle?

yes, it will be a challenge to accompany him for the trip. but if others go with him, it will present more challenges. for one thing, wanbin's medical team and legal guardian are very strick on releasing his medical records and legal documents--giving them to the travel companion is releasing them, in those people's minds. i've been working with them long enough on wanbin's case, so they feel a bit more comfortable to release the stuff to me. in our february meeting about transferring wanbin to china, they were insisting on passing his medical record directly to his future doctors in china. the trouble is that they don't know anything about the chinese medical system. now they feel comfortable enough to give me the record instead.

zhiliang mentioned that he didn't get to send in donation in time. actually, time is not an issue, especially now that we've got enough fund to send wanbin to china. the travel cost is only part of the expenses that have to be covered by donation $$$. the amount of fund we'll have for him remains an issue: we'd like him to have more so as to reduce the risk of financial problems down the road. as our appeal letter described, the $20,000 goal was set based on our estimate of the airfare plus half (=c $330/month) of his future monthly social security ($660/month) for the two years before his 62nd birthday. won't he be in a better shape if we can get him $660/month rather than $330/month for these 2 yrs? besides, a lot of medical/care bills are expected for the intial period.

that's why we call on people to continue pushing for financial help with wanbin, even as he's leaving. getting him to china is a huge achievement, yet only part of the battle.

sorry, i wrote too long a message. thanks for reading.

xiwei

If a wheelchair is needed, I think, it can borrowed from the long term care facility where WB stays. You can buy the formulated liquid food for adult from any grocery store for WB to drink it is better than the baby food, or just ask the place WB stays now to provide liquid can food for him, normally they do.

Hope you and WB have a safe trip back to China.

Xiwei,

Best wishes for your trip!
I spoke to the lady in Shanghai Market. They told me that the person who found Wanbin had a stroke does not want to release his name. He is a friend of Wanbin, and he sometimes helps Shanghai Market to fix internet problem. That's all they told me.

Best regards,
Xiaoliang

Xiwei,

Thank you for everything you have been done as a true friend.

I'll see Wanbin off at the airport. I can drive my 7 seat van. All back sets can be removed if necessary.

it's a great offer. zhongyi: thank you. but you live so far west. wanbin's legal guardian also lives pretty far, in new brighton. it will be easier for someone living on the east side to provide the ride--and deliver me back to woodbury. zheng feng: where do you live? xiwei

nice to hear from you, zhiliang. as you can see from my website, the fund drive has been going well. it's gone on for a while, though. the 1st draft appeal letter was done back mid-feb. the ad in china tribune came out 4 weeks ago... once it was established that he'll get social security after his 62nd birthday and the monthly ss checks will be adequate for him to live on,  it was our goal all along to get him to china as soon as possible. at the feb meeting with his legal guardian and medical team about transferring him to china, i told them that it would be a matter of a month or so to get him going. a month or so later, we're where we wanted it to be. i'm grateful. and quite relieved. xiwei

There should be no problem. Zheng Feng lives on the west side too.

I'll take a half day off and be there after lunch.

What time to you need me to be there exactly?

zhongyi: thanks. i'm taking your offer, as now i have a new reason.

i just got wanbin's laptop, a sony vaio, from the care center. it's dead. the care center said that it was spill that killed it. the power light turns on when the button is pressed, but the screen doesn't. there are three lock symbols (each lock has a symbol in its middle: 1, A, up/down double arrows, respectively) on the computer, all of which turn on as well. maybe it's locked up somehow? the laptop was his most valuable possession. you might be able to resuscitate it.

zheng feng: thank you for your repeated offers, and for everything you've done for wanbin, including your ice fishing expedition

btw, i was in the care center, from noon to 1:30. that was right after wanbin's lunch time. he was in bed, taking a nap on and off. i asked him how many days we'd be on the way, he just stared back at me. i said in three days. and he nodded. he stood up, buckled and then zipped up his pants, and went back lying down again... his hands/figures work perfectly. i packed all his belongings, in his suitcase. he's ready to go. there are only a couple of days in between.

regards,

xiwei

Hi Xiwei,

Great, the time has finally come for you to send lao Lu home! Have a safe and wonderful trip! Remember to take some photos of lao Lu now and him with his families in China later. To have a few of these photos in your website should be a good way to say thanks to all those who have cared for him and helped to make the trip possible. I am sure people must be curious to see how he looks like now.

Cheers,
Ming

I can take a look at Wanbin's laptop. Hope it can be fixed. At least I can do my best to recover whatever left on the hard drive, which may be very valuable to himself and his family.

I'll come to see him before lunch time tomorrow along with his long time friend Libbie. Let me know how can we meet so I can have the laptop during the weekend. I can come to your place to pick it up.
