Richard,
You are being unfair to yourself. To me you are very British just like I consider myself very Lebanese of Armenian descent. That does not mean that you are not a definite internationalist. Welcome to the club. You are a “true internanational”. You proved it at least while you were at UNICEF.

There was one occasion, was it after Jim, when the Swedish government briefly proposed a candidate. And, still with a sense of shame, I allowed myself briefly after Jim had died, to be a UK candidate. I felt shame because for the first time in UNICEF, I felt I was a Britisher and not a true international. Richard

A great discussion on this XUnicef forum around the implications for last weeks US election for UNICEF, implications for CRC etc etc, but (and I confess I have not read every email), I see very little about what will happen in the medium to near future with the selection of a new UNICEF Executive Director. For reasons that others can explain far better than I can I am sure, the 'tradition', effectively unchallenged by all States, is that the US President in power selects the UNICEF ExDir. The present ExDir was selected, excuse me and correct me if I am mistaken, in late 2017 by the administration of Mr Donald Trump. The XUnicef group might, just perhaps, have some little influence, if they were to co-ordinate and seek to focus their views, on who Bidden/Harriss might be looking at when it comes to selecting a replacement for Ms Fore.

As XUNICEF/UN folks we have much to rejoice in the Biden/Harris election. Biden's brief & simple message to the world in his acceptance speech was "America will lead, not leave!"
Following that pledge, we can count on the US to rejoin the Paris Climate Accord, the JCPOA Iran Nuclear deal, the
, the UN Human Rights Council,
& resume American leadership at the
with dignity, decency & humility.
I also rejoice in the joy & relief felt by hundreds of professional American diplomats who will no longer have to defend the indefensible policies & undiplomatic acts of a crude narcissist bully as their President.
On the other hand, Biden's contested victory also points to a huge challenge for the Democrats to win the support of nearly half of Americans, mostly White, male, blue-collar workers without college degrees, whom Donald Trump attracted with false promises. To defeat Trumpism without Trump, Democrats need to creatively but responsibly respond to their genuine grievances with empathy but without surrendering to narrow-minded nationalist nostalgia.
A huge communications & persuasion challenge, indeed.

And, Richard, rejoining the Paris agreement – THAT is the most important thing…

With all these celebrations without proper social distancing, one can expect a surge in COVID gor sure. If Biden is committed to fighting COVID which he says he is, then the first message as the new president to American public should have been no crowds in the streets
