Google needs better AI to deal with CLF spam

So far it looks like "candy" and "salewto" have not been banned. How
is it that I can see the patterns here and yet Google with a cloud of
500,000 computers can not?

I would not mind a trip to Ann Arbor, but I don't think visiting their
ad-words headquarters there would do any good.

I do think CLF has gone off the deep end. A message from "alex-lurk"
says "I'm using OpenMP and have big performance problems." Directly
above it is another spam from "Dr. Shiffer". How do I get the coffee
out of my keyboard?

I've just installed Firefox, Greasemonkey and the latest ggkiller
script. They seem to work well at getting rid of individual posters by
name. I see that the kill file supports regular expressions. Can
someone briefly describe the family or regexes that it accepts or
point me to a reference?

Can I zap posters by e-mail address or zap all @fubar.com ?

Excuse reply to self, but in retrospect this is similar to swatting a
fly with a battleship. Even with all the computing horsepower I have,
I still see the "killfiled" posts vanishing from the screen as I
click. With due respect, I think the best solution is to find a
reasonable ISP or at least a news feed provider.

Or I can wait until the local government decides to deal with spammers
and other computer criminals, and I win the lottery, and my wife gets
a pony for her birthday....

Very funny Elliot!

Have you noticed there's no real migration from CLF to this forum?

I've been resting a bit and not coding for a few weeks. When I am
actively coding, however, I google the clf archives a lot for answers.
This may be one reason why clf members seem reluctant to move.

Probably the main reason is that spam is not a real problem for those
who use newsreading software instead of Google Groups. Many of the
regulars in CLF have been there a very long time, so for them Google
is a novelty, or perhaps an annoyance. What content would you suggest
we discuss to stimulate activity here?

[lately I've been programming for the Apple 2, so Fortran has taken a
back seat for now.]

I've reached the point where I feel a bit mentally overloaded. So I've
been resting, doing things related to art, and working in fits and
spurts. The work, which includes law, as well as coding, doesn't leave
me with much room to think about all the great things I'd like to
discuss in Fortran, or what might inveigle Fortraners to spend time
here.

I plan to interface Fortran code with Lisp sometime in the future,
though. I'll raise the issue then, but I'm not up to energetic,
stimulating discussions just now.:-(

Something tells me that McCarthy may have already tried that at MIT
way back when.

Of course he did, and so have many others since, I'm sure. But now
there are new Fortran standards, better tools - and I have much to
learn.

Well the language environment has changed since then. There are a few
regulars who talk aboutt mixing Python with Fortran in CLF. I have not
done this myself....
More languages are available that can deal with lists as first class
data objects as well as things like associative arrays.

Of course you don't need Fortran and sophisticated AI to get rid of
the spam in CLF. Just match on the spamvertised web sites!

Posting here is even more difficult today. Somehow the page layout has
changed. The nav bar and the Google ads appear in the upper left of
the screen. I don't know if
it is a browser problem or what?

Spam seems to have re-surfaced with a vengeance in CLF. The general
story of spam overwhelming google groups, but not reports of CLF, was
posted on slashdot.

I suggest just removing any posting with www in the title is a good
start.
Then any non ASCII characters (i.e. no double-character codes, no
codes #00 to #1f and a few upper specials)

You assume the Google is self interested enough to filter out the
spam. IMO I have seen a way that this spam hurts them directly. It
dilutes the value of Google's ad-words (sponsored links). Look in CLF
when it is filled up with spam. Notice that ad links on the right side
of the page no longer have anything to do with Fortran or some of the
usual topics discussed there. Instead, they are polluted with ads for
goods similar to those spamvertized.

[If you have an alternative to "spamvertized" that would be nice too
beyond the trivial s/s/z.
OT: The police here think a person is from Mars if he says "My house
has been burgled."]
