The Army started a prescribed burn on the former Fort Ord in the northern portion of the Fort Ord National Monument. The prescribed burn was started at 9:09 a.m. for the 265 acre Unit B. The ignition phase is expected to last for a few hours. Smoke is expected for several more hours after the ignition phase is over.

FORT ORD NATIONAL MONUMENT AND ADJACENT AREA ACCESS: Fort Ord recreational users please note the following roads within the area are now closed: Eucalyptus Road, Gigling Road (east of 8th Avenue), 8th Avenue Extension, Parker Flats Road, Parker Flats Cut-off, Watkins Gate Road, Barloy Canyon Road, and Hennekens Ranch Road. Access to the Fort Ord National Monument will be limited to the trailheads located off of Highway 68 (Badger Hills and Creekside Terrace Trailheads). See access map at http://fortordcleanup.com/programs/blm-area-b/.

If you have health problems that can be aggravated by smoke, the Army suggests that you take such precautions as closing your windows and keeping them closed through tomorrow morning, remaining indoors as much as possible, limiting physical activity, ensuring you have adequate supplies of your medications and taking them as prescribed, and drinking plenty of liquids. If you have breathing problems during the prescribed burn, call your health provider or dial 911 to get medical advice or treatment.
If you live on or near the former Fort Ord, the Army suggests that you take such precautions as closing your windows through the following morning. During previous burns, smoke impacts were reported in the Highway 68 corridor and parts of Marina, Seaside, Monterey, Del Rey Oaks, Pacific Grove, Camel, Pebble Beach and Carmel Valley. These areas may experience smoke this afternoon and evening.
