Admittedly, I've played some games within a series out of order and came away hooked enough to seek out previous entries. I can see a scenario where you play Strikers and come away with a strong curiosity for where these characters came from and how the Phantom Thieves came to be. Given the relatively light reliance on knowing exactly what happened in the original RPG, Persona 5 Strikers just might be what draws you into the series, and it could be your next favorite thing. I'd go as far to say that there is no wrong way to go about it.

Except if you look really deep in the lore there is not even an overarching story linking the games together. You can start with whatever Persona game you want, and you will not be lost with them referring to what happened in the previous game. I personally started with 5 with no problems. Played 4 later.

Another thing to note about the Persona Series, they seem to love to make a remake a few years after the original game, that is basically a retelling of the same story with some added components, an additional character and some QoL adjustments. So there is P3 and P3 FES, P4 and P4 Golden, P5 and P5 The Royale, that basically tell the same story just with some differences in gameplay and a few minor differences in how the story goes.

The basic things that link the Persona games together: You play a highschooler in Japan, that usually just transfered to a new school. You and the friends you make will become in contact with another world where you can use the power of personas to fight monsters. Thats pretty much it.

Unless you are willing to be surprised at the jump in graphics from ps4.The older versions have completely different characters in different worlds, while the premise remains the same. There are some different quirks and lore but the older versions are limited due to their console capacity.

I recently played through Persona 4 and loved the game and it's characters so much. I bought it this last holiday alongside Persona 4 Arena. I was about to start playing Persona 4 Arena, but wants to know, since there are a few characters from Persona 3, do I need to play it to enjoy Persona 4 Arena, or is my 64 hours with Persona 4 enough to get most of the enjoyment from Persona 4 Arena?

Since most of the cast is from P4, I'd say you are good because you played P4 already. There will be some things you might not fully understand from the P3 character's side but they don't get too deep into the P3 stuff, so you can still enjoy P4A. Have fun!

I would say that it's really not necessary. There's only a few characters from Persona 4, and while it does provide updates on what happened to them since Persona 3, the bulk of their story addresses what's going on during the events of the game. The only one you'd really be missing out on without Persona 3 is Elizabeth.

I just bought Persona 4 Arena after spending a week or so watching a Let's Play of Persona 3. I had tried to play it last Summer but I got to a point where I was stuck in the dungeon and said "actually I don't want to spend a few hours grinding, all I want to do is progress the story." After seeing it to the end (and seeing 100% of it too!) I think Persona 3 is worth seeing on its own terms. Definitely. And don't read a Wiki, go in blind.

Going into Persona 4 Arena I found that seeing P3 first was the right move. As a result I was much more excited to see the Persona 3 characters, find out what they've been up to, and see them meet the P4 crew.

I think it'll add some love for the P3 characters. But for story, no. There is only really one thing I can think of, but it is a huuuuuge spoiler for 3 and barely even matters in p4a. So It's not really worth looking up.

@MrPilkington: If you have the time to spare I recommend P3, though it might be beneficial if you have a PSP/Vita to play P3P instead as its gameplay isn't outdated like P3 is. Especially going from P4 to P3.

@metalisticpain: I actually looked into it some more yesterday and found out that they reference P1 and P2 some in P3 and since that is connected to P4 I guess everything is connected in some way. The Kirijo Group was apparently a part of another group that was featured in story of the first two Persona games and so on

I'm going to say I doubt it, but I do think you should play through either P3FES or P3P (I prefer P3P, myself, in spite of what it sacrifices) at some point, just because Persona 3 is a damn fine game.

i would be impressed if you can get anywhere in that game playing in Japanese without being fluent. good luck!!! you know i think another option is to play in english and turn on japanese voices. i dunno if u would need to rebuy but the original version is cheap

Persona 5 is probably much better idea than say Fire Emblem Three Houses ( what I am currently playing ). At least the vocabulary used in Persona 5 will be easier / more useful in some cases as is set in modern times. Great choice . Like other people are saying, the main thing is to have fun and enjoy the experience.

I would say for learning that it is great! The character names are all in kanji, but they arent too hard, so you will learn them really quick. Each character has their own specific style of language that reflects a certain personality type, and you will see a lottttt of slang. (Like Ryuji using っす on the end of nearly every sentence).

Following the global success of Persona 5 Royal, Atlus saw it fit to share its whole series with the wider gaming public. This was honestly a great decision. Before the latest influx, most people were forced to play Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden on the PlayStation Vita or PSP. While these are both great options, it meant that a whole generation of gamers had only played the last, admittedly enjoyable, entry in the series.

This also presents an interesting conundrum following the release of Persona 5 Royal on several new platforms, mainly the PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox systems and PC. For folks who have been keeping count, this is now the third time that the game has been released in one form or another.

You have the original release on the PlayStation 3 and PS4 back in 2016 in Japan and then 2017 worldwide. Then there was the release of the more fleshed out Persona 5 Royal in 2019 in Japan once again and then 2020 everywhere else.

Ideally, it would be nice if getting the PS4 version of Persona 5 Royal meant you can get a free upgrade to the PS5 version as well like some other games. But that is not the case here so it means you now have to make a decision.

It was easy to make the case for getting Persona 5 Royal even if you already have the original Persona 5 because P5 Royal came with a good amount of new content, including a new character, a new area, a new palace, a new semester and even new mechanics.

I actually went through a good chunk of the new features of Persona 5 Royal in my original preview for the game when it first released a couple or so years back. I recommend reading that to see if all the additions are something that would interest you.

The only question, really, is what version to get, which honestly depends on what console or system you have and whether you want to play on a TV or monitor, want to play on the go, or have your cake and eat it, too, by being able to do both.

It seems like Persona 5 Strikers might be part of the PS+ package for January, alongside Dirt 5 and Deep Rock Galactic in one of the strongest line-ups we've seen in a long while. If that's true, everyone needs to make time to play Persona 5 Strikers next year. Come on, it's not like anything else is coming out. I mean, aside from Elden Ring. And Pokemon Legends: Arceus. And The Witch Queen. And Horizon Forbidden West. And Dying Light 2. And Sifu. Okay so a lot of things are coming out. So what? I don't care. Cancel your dinner reservations. Send your kids to bed early. Just play Persona 5 Strikers, okay?

Persona 5 Strikers is essentially a sequel to Persona 5, and it's a game I wrote a lot about this year. It eventually finished sixth on my game of the year list, and despite the rampant popularity of Persona 5, it doesn't seem to have landed in the same way. Perhaps that's because, in classic JRPG fashion, people assume that Strikers, much like Royal before it, is simply another version of the base game. It's not - it's a full sequel, picking up where Persona 5 (confusingly ignoring Royal completely) left off and building an entirely new story. If that's all you were confused about, then huzzah! Be confused no more.

Related: Persona 5 Only Gives Its Women Power When It's Objectifying ThemIf, however, you knew it was a sequel all along and simply skipped it because it was a musou game, then you are not invited to my birthday party. I know musou games aren't the most popular, but this might be one of the least musou musous out there. Unless you love musous, in which case you'll find a lot of the typical musou tropes reinvented here in strange and interesting ways. Also - and here's the kicker - unlike Persona 5 vanilla, it's not 200 hours long and it doesn't turn you all into rats 150 hours in.

Persona 5 is one of my favourite games of the past decade, but I'm not even sure if I like it. I wrote, for its fifth anniversary, about what a masterpiece it is, and have consistently written about Joker, about Ann, about Makoto, Tae, Futaba, plus several pieces speculating on Persona 6. I love this group of characters, as a collective group of friends rather than just individuals you interact with, more than the characters in maybe any other game. The art is gorgeous. The anime cutscenes add wonderful heart to proceedings. I'm just not sure I like playing it that much.
