Mercenariescan be hired in the Cantina initially, after which they can used for the rest of the Campaign. Once you hire them in the Cantina using your Credits, you must then hire them in each individual mission from the Merc Compound.

Mercenaries have no build time. Provided you have enough minerals, vespene gas and supply, they will deploy right away, always next to the compound you buy them at. The rapid deployment makes them great at boosting your attack force or coming to the defense of a base. They do not require the normal building for their unit types which can allow you to totally skip a building if you only need a few of those units (such as siege tanks to defend your base).

While mercenaries typically cost more than normal units, their higher stats more than makes up up for it, essentially making them "hero" units. They also allow you to get a better use out of your maximum food because they do not use more food than regular units. Finally, mercenaries can only be called down a limited number of times each mission, and they have a cooldown timer between each successive hiring (starts activated).

War Pigs are the default mercenary but by no means a bad one. They provide relatively cheap yet tough units early in a mission. With stim packs/medics, they are serious business. If nothing else, you can garrison them into bunkers for base defense, but you may prefer to garrison weaker marines while taking these tougher guys to the front line.

Devil Dogs are one you may want to skip because firebats generally aren't worth using in this game. That said, if you do unlock them, you may as well use them as expendable tanks for your army until they get killed.

Siege Breakers have to be the best mercenary on the list, one you should always get. These guys bring astounding firepower to the defense of your bases. While most mercenaries can be viewed as expendable, these you should protect, repair, and not allow to die if it can be helped. On missions where all you want from a factory is a few siege tanks, you could simply hire these and no longer need the building at all.

Jackson's Revenge, an elite battlecruiser, is amazing. It's literally a flying fortress that can take massive punishment before wrecking. But like any unit, it needs support, especially against groups of anti air enemies. It is also recommended you have science vessels around to repair it.

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames is a third-person shooter set in Venezuela and is the second and last installment in the Mercenaries series, sequel to 2005's Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction. It was Pandemic Studios' first game for the 7th generation of consoles. It was developed by Pandemic Studios for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, while Pi Studios and Artificial Mind & Movement developed the PlayStation 2 version and LTI Gray Matter the Windows version, with the publisher being Electronic Arts for all versions. The game was released on consoles on August 31, 2008, while the PC port came out in September 4 on EA Store[1]. There's also a mobile version developed by Capybara Games and published by I-play[2] which came out earlier, in March 1. The PS2 version can be played on a backward compatible PS3.

On June 3, 2011, when Origin launched, the game was moved from the old EA Store to the new platform. On August 2, 2021 Mercenaries 2 was removed from the Origin store[3], making physical copies the only way to obtain the game.

Less than two years after its release, the online functionalities of the PC port were shut down, on March 16, 2010[4]. Today it is possible to emulate the servers with a third party tool[5]. On November 9, 2022, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions met the same fate[6].

Like the previous title, Mercenaries 2 is an action-adventure, third-person shooter with vehicular combat elements set in an open world environment. The gameplay remains pretty much the same, although new features have been included, like a more destructible environment, co-operative multi-player mode, quick time events while hijacking vehicles, a fuel stockage stat, a grappling hook for helicopters, a waypoint system and the ability to swim.

The game features a lot more vehicles than its predecessor, with more variants of each vehicle and new vehicle types: motorcycles and boats. New weapon types have been introduced as well, such as pistols and grenade launchers. One other new addition to this iteration of Mercenaries is the ability to build a Private Military Company (PMC) and recruit mercenaries into it. There are three mercenaries that can be recruited: Eva Navarro, who will act as a mechanic once recruited, Ewan Devlin, an helicopter pilot who can pick up valuable objects encountered in the map and also extract the player, and Misha Milanich, a bomber pilot and the player's source for airstrikes.

There are six factions this time: Venezuela, which replaces North Korea as the main antagonist, Universal Petroleum, People's Liberation Army of Venezuela, the Pirates, as a replacement for the Russian mafia, and two returning factions, Allied Nations and China. This time, all factions have their own shop where the mercenary can buy stuff.

The Deck of 52 system is long gone, but there are still some NPCs on the map that will grant rewards to the player from various factions if they are captured or killed, but they are completely optional. They also come in form of structures that need to be destroyed. The final goal of the game is to exact revenge on Ramon Solano for betraying the mercenary at the beginning of the game by completing contracts offered by various factions to gather informations.

The story follows the player's hunt for Ramon Solano, a druglord who contracted the player's mercenary for a job without paying him/her. Following a militaristic coup, Solano becomes the dictator of Venezuela. He uses his position to seize control of the country's oil supply, resulting in an international incident and distress among OPEC. Alongside Solano's Rebel Forces, a large portion of the Venezuelan army fiercely support the dictator's cause. The other rebel forces, in opposition to Solano, have risen under the name of the PLAV, the People's Liberation Army of Venezuela. Soon, numerous other factions join the fight for control of Venezuela's oil, such as the massive Universal Petroleum Corporation, the Pirates, China's People's Liberation Army, and the Allied Nations. These five forces will inevitably form the backbone of a war to determine the fate of the country's oil supply.

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames introduces new characters to the Mercenaries series, and at the same time it brings back some of the cast from the first title, in particular the three protagonists.

The development of Mercenaries 2 began 12 months after the first game's release, on December 2005. The game was known at the time for being delayed many times. Its original release date was December 2006, before being postponed to Spring 2007, Winter 2007, Spring 2008[7], Summer 2008, and then September 2008[8]. An early concept of the game, which was set in Australia, featured robotic soldiers and a final boss that was secretly a cyborg. The idea was scrapped and was later reused for the cancelled third installment, Mercenaries 3: No Limits. The Australian setting was scrapped almost immediately as well, in favor of a South American setting, with beta tests set in Argentina and Suriname, until Venezuela was picked for its links to communism, its internal conflicts, and the presence of oil. Two more playable mercenaries were planned, including Fiona, who can still be played as a skin for Jennifer, with the Total Payback update.

While the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC versions are mostly all the same, the PlayStation 2 version of the game is substantially different, other than being toned down graphically. This previous gen port was built on the same engine of the original game for PS2, meaning that it reused a lot of its assets and models, including those of vehicles, buildings and NPCs. It also uses the same HUD.

Besides that, the contracts are different, the nature of missions is drastically changed, their order is reshuffled, certain characters are missing while other are exclusive, and it lacks numerous gameplay features, to name but a few. The multi-player co-op mode is completely absent, making this game single-player only.

The mobile port is a completely different game instead. It is developed on the java platform for mobile devices, and is a 16 bit run-and-gun shoot 'em up game in 2D, where you can play only as Nilsson. In the game the player can move around in 4 directions while Mattias will shoot automatically to the enemies with the primary weapon, while the secondary weapon requires the player's input, including grenades.

The game features different missions, weapons, airstrikes and characters than the main releases, while the very few vehicles present are not usable. The plot is completely different as well, taking place after Solano's defeat and featuring a new antagonist, Cervera.

Pandemic Studios developed a free patch, called Total Payback, which adds six new playable characters in the form of skins, cross-region co-op, and cheats[9]. The patch was released on October 23, 2008 for PS3 and October 31 for Xbox 360 users after being delayed[10]. The PC port never received this patch, instead it got a corrective update on September 22, the patch 1.1[11].
