Dear My Friends,
Here are most updated issues about the projects
1.There’s 3 issues until the end of the year of Orthopaedocs Today Europe:
·        SEPTEMBER: The deadline to provide me with text(s) and visual(s) is the 11 August by the end of the day.
·        OCTOBER: 7 September by the end of the day.
·        NOVEMBER/DECEMBER: 28 October by the end of the day.
Kindly note that articles should be between 0.5 and 2.5 A4 page, with a main title.
All pictures & images used should be in high definition, which means 300 dpi. If you have any doubt, feel free to submit it to me in advance.

We can include 4 topics but to be honest it is impossible to put all 4 in every issue thus we have no enough space for all. We have to pick up 2 from the topics below
a - FORTE news
b - Expert space (invited article, etc)
c - Resident space (talking about/comparing different countries training programs is a MUST DO. Thank you very much Francisco)
d - Press space (last important studies/events)

FORTE news should be written by the President and the others will up to us.
So I could arrange an expert space for September about “Achilles tendon ruptures the future perspective” .
And who would like to be in charge for October ? and Nov?Dec? (PLEASE INDICATE YOUR NAME - THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT  - THEY ASKED US TO SEND OUR PUBLICATION PLAN SOON)

2. I will submit  our application for AAOS booth and lets see what will happen. Theonly thing that I need is FORTE official mailing address (SHIRLEY PLEASE PROVIDE ME THE OFFICIAL ADRESS THAT WE USED IN BANK ACCOUNT? - THIS IS URGENT)

3. For the national representative request letter, I believe it is more formal and effective way to proceed through EFORT. Because our goal is to reach as much country as possible and EFORT has 42 members (we don’t have such) . And we also don’t have a regular database at least for now. So as Enis suggested before we can ask EFORT to send that letter on behalf of FORTE and ask the national associations to send their resident representative to FORTE general assembly. In addition after my negotiation with head office, EFORT is about accept to organize  out general assembly during EFORT ExCOm meeting in February (this is a good chance and it is a good opportunity to show how serious we are). They just want to know the duration, number of participants and set up. So I believe next EFORT in Prague is too far.
Joao could you please send the final version if the letter regarding to all suggestion? Than I will send it to EFORT head office.
Who want to be in charge to prepare the rough programme?

4.  Even it is not a miracle,  I will send InsightOrtho and ask them to send us a rough contract and lets see what they could provide us for free..then discuss again

5. FORTE website is already done but they ask us for mailing address? (SHIRLEY PLEASE)

6. How about the Springer books? (NICK PLEASE WE NEED UPDATE)

Here are the hot topics…If we would like to work as a real team,  your response is very important and necessary guys.

Thank you for your efforts

My best
Gazi

Very good! I will reply below your text:

Gazi, I agree with you. It's not possible to have all 4 topics in every issue (that's what I've said). What I meant was that all this 4 are valid topics.
For instance: In September's issue we can put FORTE's news (I agree with the President as the formal speaker) and an expert space (I've already done an article of a summary of Dr. Villar's presentation in FORTE session in Istambul, if you want to use it). But in October's issue, maybe we don't have any FORTE's news, so we could publish a certain country training program specificities and a summary of recent evidence and important events! I think we should always consider (at least) all this 4 topics as possible publication themes...

Gazi, Shirley and I haven't still made the transfer of treasure to me, but this is basically my fault, because I'm waiting for EFORT to reply to our request for support...

3. For the national representative request letter, I believe it is more formal and effective way to proceed through EFORT. Because our goal is to reach as much country as possible and EFORT has 42 members (we don’t have such) . And we also don’t have a regular database at least for now. Who want to be in charge to prepare the rough programme?

Gazi, we have around 11 countries with updated representation. I attach the current database. The other that haven't replied yet, will probably be impossible to gather unless we use an official channel like EFORT. So I agree we should send the letter (I also will attach the last version of it)

4.  Even it is not a miracle,  I will send InsightOrtho and ask them to send us a rough contract and lets see what they could provide us for free..then discuss again
ok, great!

5. FORTE website is already done but they ask us for mailing address? (SHIRLEY PLEASE)
As I've said, this is still "blocked". Maybe we should move forward with the old one, and then update it when time comes

6. How about the Springer books? (NICK PLEASE WE NEED UPDATE)

Someone needs to supply a official FORTE address, I suggest either the president or treasurer home address. I have never had anything posted but it keeps the officials happy.

I think we should always consider (at least) all this 4 topics as possible publication themes...

NP: I agree. it is reasonable not to have space in every issue. I also agree to start with the presidential letter and expert view. Since Gazi you will be in charge with September issue, then do the FORTE news and the Achilles tendon article for this issue.  Then I could do November, and we can have Dr Vilar’s talk (since it is quite old already) and a study update/event. And then for the November we can have again a letter/news article and a study/event update or a country trainee update.
But, let’s aim to have everything ready by August 1st, September 1st and October 15th, so we will have time in case something goes wrong.

Gazi, Shirley and I haven't still made the transfer of treasure to me, but this is basically my fault, because I'm waiting for EFORT to reply to our request for support...

NP: Gazi, I believe that you could send the application with your address in. I do not know if it would be better to have the EFORT address (so as to have something permanent), but I do not know if you can wait (is there a deadline?)

They just want to know the duration, number of participants and set up. So I believe next EFORT in Prague is too far.
Joao could you please send the final version if the letter regarding to all suggestion? Than I will send it to EFORT head office.
Who want to be in charge to prepare the rough programme?

Gazi, we have around 11 countries with updated representation. I attach the current database. The other that haven't replied yet, will probably be impossible to gather unless we use an official channel like EFORT. So I agree we should send the letter (I also will attach the last version of it)

NP: I am still confused. Let me see if I have these right. We have 11 (only) active member-countries from the Residents. So there is no point to try to send them a letter, correct? Therefore, the idea is to ask the National Societies (via EFORT) for their help (to provide information for their resident association). I agree with this plan to ask the National societies via EFORT. If we do it on our own, then probably we do not have a chance to get any proper reply!!
Now the issue with having the General assembly in February is that somebody has to cover the expenses of these people, right? Because we cannot expect them (they are residents) to cover travel and accommodation by themselves. We cannot cover these expenses ourselves as FORTE. Personally, I do not believe that the National Societies will cover the expenses for this travel for their residents (and this is the reason that if it is during the EFORT congress, they might-or the residents could combine this travel with the Congress!). These things need quite good organization and we need time. Even though Prague is far, February is very soon to coordinate everything. ALSO, if we say to EFORT that we expect 50 people and 20 will show up that will be embarrassing!! and then we may show that we are not so serious… So we need to carefully plan this.
I am not suggesting anything, and if Gazi you think that we can do it, we can go for it, but based on our history, I am not so optimistic.. That’s all.
If you want, I can organize the program and draft something.

4.  Even it is not a miracle,  I will send InsightOrtho and ask them to send us a rough contract and lets see what they could provide us for free..then discuss again
ok, great!

NP: Ok, cool!! Contract for what?

5. FORTE website is already done but they ask us for mailing address? (SHIRLEY PLEASE)
As I've said, this is still "blocked". Maybe we should move forward with the old one, and then update it when time comes

NP: What do you mean it is blocked? If we go with the old one, we need to update it. Some information needs to be updated (for example the executive committee)
Also, what is happening with the social media?Caglar?

6. How about the Springer books? (NICK PLEASE WE NEED UPDATE)

NP:
I gathered all the replies and I think that the 4 books that we can propose are:

1. General Orthopaedics
2. General Trauma
3. Paediatric Orthopaedics
4. Shoulder
5. Hip

For these books, the process is to assign somebody to be the Book Editor. I believe that we need to have a close look to the first books. So I would say that Gazi should be responsible for the Shoulder (he has a Fellowship in Shoulder!), I could be responsible for the General Orthopaedics (since I have performed fellowship in both Basic Science and Biomechanics and a PhD in Sports Biomechanics), and then we need volunteers for the third and fourth one. One solution is to appoint a very strong name to lead the other books, but then we need to be careful so the general content will be the same with the other two and that he will deliver in time. Or someone from us could be the third person.
How about having Vide for Pediatrics and Enis for Trauma?
And we need to hear some suggestions for the Hip book.
If you agree with these books, I will suggest them to Springer. And if the Editors are agreed, then each editor should start thinking the table of contents (always in line with the internal structure that we proposed) and then the next step is to find potential authors.

Please find the internal structure for each chapter in each Book that we need to follow:
- Anatomy/background
- Diagnosis
- Treatment
- New in ….
- Case examples
- Questions
- Further study

I will confirm with Springer the process, but what they typically do for Book Series.
So, let’s make a schedule to have the Editors agreed until the July 30th (if you all agree, then it would be much faster) and then let’s have (each Editor for his Book) the table of contents ready by the end of August (and a rough idea/plan for authors)

Important dates:
July 31st: Agree on Book Editors
August 31st: Complete table of contents (and idea about authors)
September 30th: finalize authors

Finally, allow me to make a general comment.
Please comment/reply and participate in all activities of this committee!!!
I know that we are all busy, but we all agreed to be part of this committee.
I do not consider that replying to some emails within a month is adequate as obligation to be part of the FORTE committee.
Unfortunately, we sometimes do not even reply to these emails, even though we all recognize the critical issues and decisions we are involved. Sometimes the deadlines are very tough, I understand that, but if we will leave with no deadline, then we will not make any progress.
Please note, that when one of our former presidents years ago had a serious health problem, FORTE felt behind a lot..
We are very lucky that our current and next President are very active and we need to help them in this very important role! We are a group of friends, a team. You cannot have a soccer team with 4 or 5 people, right? They will definitely loose! I do not know if this would be a 7-1 defeat, but we will loose!! So be part of this team!!Help out!! The things that you are not doing, somebody else (from us) will need to do extra!!
I believe that the obligations that come with this honor to be a Board member are far more!! But let’s start from the basics..reply and participate..
I know we are all busy. I am currently at a very busy conference, and when I ‘ll go back I will have 3/7 days OR, 1/7 outpatients and I will be also on call 2/7..
BUT, I feel that is is unfair to the other members of the committee if I would not reply.

Thank you all!

Nick

Thanks Nick for all your comments...
I agree with you.. for FORTE to move on everyone need (at least!) to reply... otherwise we will be always falling behind..
If someone feels that their agenda is not able to accommodate FORTE's demands, they must feel open to share this and something will be done to overcome this...but one cannot remain in silence waiting for tasks to disappear by themselves.

When I said the address is "blocked" I meant the physical office address. It's blocked because we are still waiting for EFORT decision.

Regarding this subject, yesterday I've met Dr. Cassiano and we've talked personally about EFORT support. He has read my request to Mr. Stephen Cannon, and he told me it was a little bit vague. We were discussing the kind of support that FORTE wants, and we came to the conclusion that a timeline should be specified. So I will elaborate a plan that it's more specific with our projects, goals, income expectations, etc...

Also, regarding the book series, even though Pediatrics is not my favorite area, I recognize that I could be working easily with Dr. Cassiano, who is a strong name in Peds.. So, if everyone agrees, I'll be willing to propose to him this!

Keep replying everyone!

Thanks My Friends for your helps, all your suggestions are so valuable and worth consideration.

Regarding all response here are my suggestions:
1. I strongly agree that all members participation is so critic and necessary. Personally I am doing my FORTE issues after 11.30 pm every night. And believe that if you really want to do it you can arrange some time without apologize.
2. Ort Today schedule: September issue (Gazi) - October (Nick) - November (Joao) —————— (If we need an announcement I could  add a paragraph at the beginning of all issues)
3. I put my affiliation address as an official address. It could be revised due to the presidents location I believe
4. You might be right Nick about our previous organizations but i really want to proceed to organize general assembly in February and would like to push EFORT to send the letter to National Societies . Lets see. We can decrease our expectations about the participation. Don’t worry My friends we will overcome this step together, just believe in….Nick could please you send me  a rough draft, then I can send it to head office ASAP? Thanks
5. I will ask them a contract that says all services that they will provide us will be complimentary
6.I sent an email to Oscar and asked him to finalize the website project
7. If you agree, we could proceed with the books  below
   1. General Orthopaedics (Ed:Nick)
2. General Trauma (Ed: Enis)
   3. Shoulder (Ed:Gazi)
I agree Nick with the internal structure, that looks fine and the deadlines are reasonable (If you agree guys, Nick could you please kick off with Springer about that plan?)

8.THERE IS ONE MORE NEW THING. AS WE ALWAYS DREAM ABOUT AN OFFICIAL JOURNAL FOR FORTE, I HAVE NEGOTIATE WITH THE EDITOR OF SCI-EX AND PUBMED INDEXED JOURNAL "Turkish Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery”. HE WAS KEEN TO BE IN COLLABORATION WITH FORTE. SO I AM PLANNING TO SEND THEM A PROPOSAL LETTER ABOUT OUR OFFICIAL COLLABORATION AND HE WILL DISCUSS AND GET BACK TO ME AFTER THEIR EDITORIAL MEETING. THEN HOPEFULLY WE WILL HAVE AN OFFICIAL SCI-EX JOURNAL COLLABORATION.
BY THAT WAY WE WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO PUBLISH OUR EFORT ABSTRACTS IN THAT JOURNAL   AS WELL AS ALL KIND OF RESEARCHES AND REVIEWS. I BELIEVE THAT PUBLISHING IS A POWER AND INCREASE OUR REPUTATION

Your news projects are always very welcome

Hope to keep your motivation up..

My best
Gazi

Guys,

sorry that I'm a bit late for responding.
I really appreciate our Ort Today schedule. and I think every sane person will :)
3 consequtive issues: president - past-president and presedent-elect!
I believe not many societies will have such an opportunity,
we should keep up the good work.

update on new website:
I think we are about to finalize the project.
soon we should be online.
I still believe that we should have used the other website
since we have been waiting for many months
using a 'dead' site.
but the past is past.
hope we have glorious days to come with our brand new web site :)

1-3 ok
4. Ok, Gazi, let's go for it! The draft looks fine. Why we do not combine the schedule in one day, so we will reduce expenses? Do you want me to edit the draft that you prepared?
5-6 ok
7. I sent an email to Springer already. I will add Vide for Pediatrics as well.
8. I believe that having a new journal is a great idea Gazi and we have discussed this in the Past.
However, I need to ask: Why we need to collaborate with somebody to do this? Why don't we go to a publisher and propose the journal and create a new one? I know it is a big project, but I believe we can try it.
Furthermore, I had a look in the journal and it is not a clearly orthopedic Journal correct? Also, do we have any other information about the Journal? (IF, Volumes, Hx, etc)
I suggest that we should try a European Orthopaedic Journal first. For example, European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (ejost)?
Also, what specific benefits are we going to have from collaborating with somebody?

Thanks
Nick
