Hej Jonas!
I'm Ildiko, a first year MLT student taking the exam of Formal Linguistics next week. Me and my coursemates were wondering whether you could give us some information about the most important things we should revise before the exam. If I remember correctly, you mentioned that we don't need to worry too much about the ARPAbet for now.
Correct, don't bother about ARPAbet at all...
Is knowing the IPA symbols enough?
Yes, I will not force you to know the most uncommon ones...
You also mentioned that SAMPA is used often as well, shall we have a look at that, too?
Yes, but I will not ask you about any of those signs...
Moreover, among the possible exercise-types I think you talked about describing sounds on the basis of place, manner of articulation etc.
Yes, I will then only refer to basic English phonemes.
and distinguishing between oscillo-, spectrogram and spectrum.
Yes.
How much in depth shall we study this latter topic (Acoustic Phonetics)? Should we be able to do calculations, find fundamental frequency etc.
Yes.
and recognize basic sound types on the basis of a spectrogram?
Yes.
Anything else, apart from these and the basic terminology that we should revise?
Read the chapter and that will cover it I'm sure :-)
Best regards
Jonas
Thank you for your time!
Best wishes,
