Death is inevitable in The Sims 4, unless of course, you have an occult Sim with an unnaturally long life. If your Sim is ordinary or unlucky though, they will eventually pass on, become a ghost, and eventually lose their connection to the physical world. Thankfully, there are ways to combat death after it's already happened.
Updated April 9, 2024 by Jacqueline Zalace: In The Sims 4, the Book of Life is, well, a lifesaver. We've updated the formatting of this guide slightly and added a bit more information on leveling up the writing skill, allowing you to create this book as soon as possible in order to bring a Sim back to life.
After death, your writer Sim can interact with the book once more and choose the option to "Summon" the Sim, bringing their ghost to the lot. If the ghost of the Sim is already at the lot, you don't have to do this; it's just an easy way to find the ghost. At this point, they are not yet resurrected.
To fully resurrect the Sim, they will need to read their own Book of Life. The easiest way to do so is to add the ghost Sim to your household (either by increasing your friendship or by using cheats). With the Sim in your household, simply place the Book of Life down and have the ghost read it.
The point of this challenge for me was to see what the game offers with occults! I wanted to see which children got special traits, how they looked when they were born, the probability of the baby being an occult with a human mother, etc. It was a big experiment and I had so much fun with it. Unfortunately, it is close to impossible to do without mods and cheats. I also used a ton of occult cc to make the kids look like they we're actually occult sims. How you want to play the challenge is up to you! This is just a guide on how I did it!
A Sim who dies while you're actively playing their household leaves a grave marker (a gravestone if placed outdoors, or an urn if placed indoors) at the site of their death. This can be moved to a more convenient location in Build Mode, and it serves as a reminder of their life and legacy. Quite a vivid reminder, actually, since sooner or later a ghost of said Sim will emerge: looking much as they did in life, except more... translucent.
Unlike most other occult creature types in The Sims 4, you can't create ghosts in Create-A-Sim. Ghosts were introduced as a bonus rather than a big new feature, and so if you want a playable one you're meant to wait for a Sim to die (or help them along in that direction, you murderer) and then have another Sim invite them to move back in, as detailed in Method 1.
The only minor drawback is that your ghost won't come with a grave marker, meaning that some interactions tied to that object (e.g. mourning and returning to the Netherworld) are unavailable for that character.
There are two main types of cheat to add a playable ghost to your household. As always, begin by saving your game, opening the cheats console, and entering 'testingcheats on'. Then, depending on which result you want, enter one of the following cheats:
As fun as it can be to have a ghost in your Sims' household, there are some good reasons for wanting to restore your dead Sims to life. Neither family members nor the deceased themselves are ever quite able to get over the loss: living loved ones still become sad when interacting with the ghost's grave marker, and the deceased themselves have the unique option to mourn for their own lost life.
Also, ghosts can get kind of distracting after a while: even putting aside their tendency to idly possess household appliances, it can just look a bit weird to have a ghost residing alongside their living family, all of whom are still presumably growing and ageing. Ultimately, you (maybe) wanted that Sim to live a good, long, happy life, right?
Poetic Sims have the ability to write The Book of Life on a computer; once written, the book can be bound to another living Sim using the 'Capture Epic Saga' interaction. From then on, if the target Sim dies and becomes a playable ghost, they can use the book to restore themselves to life. (Note: The Book of Life cannot be bound to Sims who are already ghosts, or to its own author.)
Dedeathify: A spellcaster who has achieved the rank of Master of Untamed Magic can use the Dedeathify spell on a ghost to bring them back to life. (Requires The Sims 4: Realm of Magic game pack.)
Resurrection cheats: If the officially sanctioned in-game methods are beyond your Sims' reach - or if you want instant results - you can bring a playable ghost back to life using cheats instead.
(Luckily, if you simply must have it, the usual cheats can be used to turn any ghost into a compatible hybrid occult type. You can even turn them into an alien, something which is not even achievable in-game through normal means.)
If you have the Cats and Dogs expansion installed, your beloved fur babies will sadly be subject to the inevitabilities of life and death. Fortunately, as with any other living Sim in a household, cats and dogs who have a grave marker on the lot can reappear as ghosts and be added back to your family.
(And in case you were wondering - no, you can't exploit this system and feed the Ambrosia treat to an ordinary ghost Sim. Even a second chance at life isn't worth the indignity of eating a dog biscuit, it seems.)
Therefore, giving them Ambrosia will grant them just two or three days' extra life before they die once again, and restart the cycle as an NPC ghost. So if you want to hold on to them long-term, it's perhaps better to keep them around in ghostly form.
Money makes the world go round in The Sims 4, and just like in real life, it often feels like there's never enough of it. Luckily, there are money cheats aplenty to give your Sims a leg-up if you choose to provide them with one:
Sims can practice a wide variety of skills to help advance them through their careers, fulfil their aspirations, and generally make day-to-day life easier and more rewarding. You can use the following cheat to set a Sim's proficiency level in any skill:
Sims are designed to age and die, but you can customise their lifespans in the gameplay options menu (including turning ageing off altogether). To really exercise power over life and death, however, you can use the following cheats:
And there you have it! Every single Sims 4 cheat at your fingertips. Whether your intention is to create a paradise for your Sims or a hellish life of suffering and torment (again, to each their own), you can now do exactly that.
Perhaps you want to nab a nice screenshot and need to move the camera to get the best angle, or maybe you want to move yourself through teleportation. Then there's the slightly more noble action of bringing NPCs back to life. Whatever the reason for using them, Fallout 4 cheats make the post-apocalyptic world your oyster.
On Xbox One, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S, you can access the cheat menu by pressing and holding LT + RT + LB + RB for a couple of seconds. This will bring up the cheat menu, in which you need to type testingCheats true to enable cheats in this save.
If you wish to convert an animal to a ghost (and thus sadly kill it), there is a two-part cheat for that as well. First, enable TestingCheats. Then, you need to find the in-game ID number of the animal you wish to change. To do this, you need to type the following in the cheat console, where "FN" is "First Name" and "LN" is "Last Name":
How do I enhance a particular skill? How can a Sim comfortably reach highest level in his career? Which cheats are available for a specific Sims 4 Expansion and how do I make my Sim a ghost? In our complete cheat collection you will find all cheats for the basic game as well as all Expansions of The Sims 4.
A sims can write the book by completing the writing skill and the best selling author aspiration, there will then be an option on the computer to write the Book of Life. The book of life is a book that will resurrect ghost sims. The book of life can only be used once however your sim can write multiple books of life.
Capturing a sims Saga Once you have written the book of life click on it from either your sims inventory or by placing the book in the world. Next click Capture epic saga, this will bring up all the sims that your sim currently knows. One of Two things will happen-
Ghost sim Once a sim your sim know is and you have written their epic saga, then you can summon them (this did take several times to work). Get the ghost to move in with you, (you can always move them back out later), then get the ghost sim to read their OWN saga. This should in theory bring them back to life easily, however I did experience a lot of issues with this and in the end I think I just got lucky.
My sim recently made ambrosia and his life went back to the beginnig of adult which was great because he was three days away from being and elder. Is the only way of getting omni plant seeds to complete the opportunities? Is it true that you can only feed omni plants living things or natural things like fish and fruit and vegetables?
How to use Testing Cheats:
As listed above you must type the console command testingcheatsenabled true. This will allow you to press shift and click various locations and items to bring up special commands. I'll list some of them here. You can use these as Skills Cheats. Follow that link to learn how you might use testinghceats to raise skills in The Sims 3.
Spawning Jobs and Work Events
You can trigger career events by shift-clicking a place of work. If your Sim has one of the new professions with Ambitions, you can shift-click an inhabited lot to spawn jobs. This works for jobs like firefighter. The job types available for spawn are limited by your level in the profession, of course. It's a good way to cheat and fill those lifetime wishes. It also works for rabbit hole jobs if you click the appropriate public lots.
