We'll be studying psalms for the Autumn of the Soul from http://psalter.asaints.org:

http://psalter.tiddlyspace.com/#%5B%5BChallenging%20the%20Relationship%5D%5D

The questions are at

http://psalter.tiddlyspace.com/#%5B%5BPsalms%3A%20Questions%20for%20Discussion%5D%5D

Here are the psalms:

When: Enduring through the faithfulness of God...

How long? All creation is groaning, panting for birth. The dark night of injustice, this unquenched dryness of abandonment, goes on far too long. Why can't we have right now what we long for: the new birth, the Kingdom of righteousness, the refreshment of dawn? We find it hard to trust that the Spirit groans with us, with sighs too deep for words. But even in this dryness, we are not alone. We are being bid to join with the Spirit in relationship to God's free, uncontrolled creativity. In our pain and groaning, the hollow space within us is being prepared. This is God's time.edit
Psalm 6: Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger!...
Psalm 13: How long, Lord, will you continue to ignore me?...
Psalm 35: O Lord, fight those who fight with me!...
Psalm 38: O Lord, do not continue to rebuke me in your anger!...
Psalm 60: O God, you have rejected us...
Psalm 74: Why, O God, have you permanently rejected us?...
Psalm 77: I will cry out to God and call for help!...
Psalm 79: O God, foreigners have invaded your chosen land...
Psalm 80: O shepherd of Israel, pay attention...
Psalm 85: O Lord, you showed favor to your land...
Psalm 89: I will sing continually about the Lord's faithful deeds...
Psalm 90: O Lord, you have been our protector through all generations!...
Psalm 94: O Lord, the God who avenges!...
Psalm 123: I look up toward you...
Psalm 130: From the deep water I cry out to you, O Lord...

No: Acknowledging disappointments within the mercy of God...

I will not accept this! Facing disappointment, confronting the reality of injustice, this is a time of wrestling to know God's true name. It might not be what we've come to know in seasons before this but it can be a truer name. As Job did, we rage or groan, yearning for the god we created in other seasons. We can learn to live with hope, living fully and in the promise. In the struggle we may find, with Job, a silence that is painful, sharing God's pain with God's joy, golden in lament. For our sake, like Jacob, for our relationship with God, for tikkum olam, we keep wrestling. edit
Psalm 2: Why do the nations rebel?...
Psalm 10: Why, Lord, do you stand far off?...
Psalm 11: In the Lord I have taken shelter...
Psalm 12: Deliver, Lord!...
Psalm 14: Fools say to themselves, "There is no God"...
Psalm 52: Why do you boast about your evil plans, O powerful man?...
Psalm 53: Fools say to themselves, "There is no God....
Psalm 58: Do you rulers really pronounce just decisions?...
Psalm 73: Certainly God is good to Israel...
Psalm 75: We give thanks to you, O God! We give thanks!...
Psalm 82: God stands in the assembly of El...
Psalm 83: O God, do not be silent!...
Psalm 120: In my distress I cried out...
Psalm 129: Since my youth they have often attacked me...
Psalm 137: By the rivers of Babylon...

Why: Exposing our wounds to the healing of God...

The silence that we find at last brings us from rage to lament. The sacred books become the family album of people who have come to know deeply what it is not to understand why but still to seek meaning in a life with God even when we seem abandoned. To be abandoned is to find out how real we are. So real that we exist even when all else is gone from us. Outside the Garden, on the Cross, we exist and are, even then, with the Eternal outside the Garden, on the Cross. There we know our wounds and, in compassion, the wounds of others. It seems contrary, but it may be that by these wounds, we are healed.

In our why, in our search for meaning, we are opening ourselves to a call to find and repair with the Creator what is worthy of our lament. We are being invited to step with trust into the abyss of if it be your will. This is a trust which may even be born in pain. It is a trust that God will work good in us and with us and through us. This word, like no, creates a space within us. The container of why will be filled with care for all the others of us crying why, filled with care for the groans of all creation. In this solidarity, why in time becomes why not. Our hearts can, at last, move from crying to the One Above Us to the One With Us sharing the hope as a new creation.edit
Psalm 22: My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?...
Psalm 39: I decided, "I will watch what I say"...
Psalm 42: As a deer longs for streams of water...
Psalm 43: Vindicate me, O God!...
Psalm 44: O God, we have clearly heard...
Psalm 88: O Lord God who delivers me!...

We'll be studying psalms for the Winter of the Soul from http://psalter.asaints.org:

Behold: Expanding our vision in the wisdom of God...

Refined in the crucible of autumn, we have, as a hard won treasure, a new humility. We turn the corner into the starkness of a winter growth that will spiral upward to develop a new cycle of seasons within us. We have won the lowliness that allows us to see the creative interdependence that illuminates all that has been made in 'glory' and wonder. We notice more. We behold.

We see each other in God's light, each of us precious and in need, beautiful and broken. We feel a tenderness flowing all around us, and surprisingly, through us. We feel a need to bless, to bestow, as we are able, the power for life. We feel a need to heal.

What we see seems alive. We are in the eye of a storm shimmering with life, a life intimately connected in a web of eternal being that includes us and all we have loved. With clear eyes we can value the goodness in what we see. There's a lot of it. In ourselves too. We come to know, if only fleetingly, that all shall be well, that all manner of thing shall be well.

The cycle of seasons will continue all our life. There will be a spring with another awakening. There will be a summer bringing a deeper repentance, a cry for help from another place within us that needs healing, and a new sensitivity to the wounds all around us. There will be another autumn and yet more emptiness to create within us so we may bear the life that is of God. But for a time, in this season, in a joyful, vibrant stillness, we rest and wonder simply in what is. And behold, it is very good.edit
Psalm 8: O Lord, our Lord...
Psalm 19: The heavens declare the glory of God...
Psalm 29: Acknowledge the Lord, you heavenly beings...
Psalm 33: You godly ones, shout for joy because of the Lord!...
Psalm 93: The Lord reigns!...
Psalm 95: Come! Let's sing for joy to the Lord!...
Psalm 97: The Lord reigns!...
Psalm 104: O Lord my God, you are magnificent...
Psalm 114: When Israel left Egypt...
Psalm 147: For it is good to sing praises to our God!...
Psalm 148: Praise the Lord from the sky!...

Yes: Devoting our will to the mission and purpose of God...

When we behold the web of life, we know how much we are called to touch all the parts of it that need healing. Like the bodhisattvas, we see that creation needs our care. We find our model in the very early hymn about the Christ that is quoted in the Letter to the the Phillipians:
Who, being in the form of God, did not count equality with God something to be grasped.
But he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, becoming as human beings are; and being in every way like a human being,
he was humbler yet, even to accepting death, death on a cross.
What's shocking is that this speaks about the nature of the One whom we call the Almighty.

Accepting the call to "feed my sheep", answering the question, "Do you love me?" brings us to the yes that the Creator makes for all creation, the yes of the Cross. The stakes seem impossibly high. Next spring when we say, "Here I am" ready to serve with God in God's creation, we'll begin to understand the surrender involved. The vine will be pruned. "Your will be done." We say it every Sunday. Maybe more often than that. We say yes from a love that echoes the love that knew us in our mother's womb. We are called to say yes to the final surrender of the life we now know, when the One who was there at our beginning, at all beginnings, says, "Follow me"
Psalm 15: Lord, who may be a guest in your home?...
Psalm 24: The Lord owns the earth and all it contains...
Psalm 26: Vindicate me, O Lord...
Psalm 32: How blessed is the one whose rebellious acts are forgiven...
Psalm 37: Do not fret when wicked men seem to succeed!...
Psalm 49: Listen to this, all you nations!...
Psalm 72: O God, grant the king the ability to make just decisions!...
Psalm 81: Shout for joy to God, our source of strength!...
Psalm 101: I will sing about loyalty and justice!...
Psalm 112: How blessed is the one who obeys the Lord...
Psalm 125: Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion...
Psalm 141: O Lord, I cry out to you. Come quickly to me!...

. . . . Resting our souls in the attention of God...

The still small voice of a silent communion calls to us into a love that needs no, can have no, words. We hear the silence after the bell is rung, the silence between each note. We sense the small time between each breath, the joyous space below the feet when we follow the Lord of the Dance. In community with each other, attentive to each other, we listen. It sometimes is the best thing we do. There is the Quiet One. Resting. We listen. God does too. It is hospitality for our souls. We do not speak. As was true in the Spring of the Soul, we are simply here.edit
Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd...
Psalm 62: For God alone I patiently wait...
Psalm 87: The Lord's city is in the holy hills...
Psalm 103: Praise the Lord, O my soul!...
Psalm 116: I love the Lord...
Psalm 118: Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good...
Psalm 127: If the Lord does not build a house...
Psalm 131: O Lord, my heart is not proud...
Psalm 133: Look! How good and how pleasant it is...
Psalm 136: Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good...

Bruce--your composition re the Winter of Psalms is so beautiful....
I am scheduled to usher on the 30th, so wouldn't be able to make Bible Study that evening, if it is changed to that date...but, of course, do what works for most! And if it is changed to the 30th, I'd appreciate information as soon as possible about the plan for the meeting to follow...
Hope the hydraulics for the stage at Bing was fixed, in time for today's events!  I'm ushering tomorrow afternoon--was there today to just listen, and to get a reminder of what to do when I arrive ...

I do stay tuned to your schedules but am taking an Archaeology class at Stanford on Wednesdays. I'm learning a lot of good stuff about the Mediterranean area in the BCE. Suddenly a lot of stuff begins to make sense (geography, colonization, Phoenicians, Celts, Carthaginians and more.) Great fun.

Dear Bible Study participants---
On Thursday, several of us trekked down to Santa Clara University and experienced  Amy Jill Levine's wonderful lecture: "Pearls, Prodigals, and Samaritans: Jesus' Parables as Jewish Stories".
It was wise, witty, and presented new ways of thinking about the parables!

The lecture was videoed and is now available online--go to:

.. you'll see the heading "Video Archive", and the lecture title is there--

It's about an hour+ long--time very well spent!
