I was wondering if there was some code out there to handle trees
(including branch expansion/collapsing) using AJAX.

No there isn't anything like that for use with Fork that I know of.
Any particular widget should be relatively easy to build, however. The
problem with widget scripts is they never do what I need and they
always do a whole lot of things I don't need. A custom widget script
will be much smaller and do exactly the right thing for your
situation.
