Fascinating -- nature is throwing us a curve ball. Extremely rare that a disease will wipe out 100% of such large wild populations be they plant or animal. Maybe this species had previously been reduced to such low populations that they lost most of their genetic diversity. This will be an interesting story to follow.

Just imagine if such a new disease showed up in populations of our species somewhere around the planet.
