to Forest-R
On June 23rd, the 1st Forest-R World Congress was held in Vancouver,
WA in conjunction with the annual Western Mensurationists meeting.
There were approximately 15 people in attendance and 3 excellent
presentations were given. The presentations included:
-John Kershaw of the University of New Brunswick presented some work
he has done with copulas and stand structure generation. His talk
focused on the tcl/tk interface and some nifty visualizations.
-Peter Gould of the US Forest Service gave an interesting presentation
on developing some interactive controls in R using rpanel. He also
wowed the crowd with demonstration from the ANIMATION package in R.
-Nick Crookston of the US Forest Service gave a brief overview of his
yaImpute package and demonstrated how to use the power of parallel
processing in R by digging into his code. The simple answer is mclapply
().
A pdf of all the presentations is available in the Files. Thanks to
all our speakers and the engaged audience on a late Sunday evening. We
are hoping to make this an annual event so please don't hesitate to
make suggestions for when and where.
Finally, thanks to Greg Johnson who continues to be our most devoted
contributor to the group and unfortunately will have to travel to
Maine to claim his prize.
