Issue: Beginning February 4th, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation began seeking public comment about proposed recommendations for stewardship of 308,000 acres of DCR parks and forests and private forests. The public comment period ends February 22nd.   What has been proposed? ·        Stricter Forest Cutting Practices Act regulations and the requirement of a licensed forester's signature on all Forest Cutting Plans; ·        Prohibition of whole tree harvesting and requiring tops/branches be left in the woods and consideration of restricting all biomass harvesting; ·        Decreasing active forest management on DCR lands from 240,000 acres to between 100,000-150,000 acres and an increase in permanent forest reserves and parklands; ·        Restriction of even-aged management on DCR lands to limited openings created for wildlife habitat or ecological restoration; ·        Creation of a Commissioner of Forest Stewardship overseeing programs protecting forests from conversion, promoting sustainable forestry on private lands, and overseeing management of publicly owned forests; ·        See all recommendations   Top Concerns: While this issue is local to MA, the process, decisions, and results could spread to other NE State Agencies in the near future.  As foresters we are the most well-trained group of citizens on the wise management of forest resources, yet our input has not sufficiently been sought or heard during the vision process.    How you can take part: The public comment period closes on February 22. It is crucial that we, as foresters, provide comments, feedback and suggestions for improvement. They haven't been heard? That's nuts. This is the exact language of the Mass. Assoc. of Prof. Foresters. Who stopped them from being heard? They never bothered sending THEIR reps to any of the countless meetings.

 

Too busy to do so? Most of us have attended these meetings at great loss of income. But the leaders of the MAPF and SAF couldn't be bothered.

 

And now they're spreading the word because this might SPREAD like invasive species!

 

This is a classic example of a special interest with a claim to a public resource.

 

half of the TSC are foresters and a fourth of the AGS are foresters, though some claim they were not wearing their forester hats- they were wearing their landowner hat or town official hat- so the forestry profession was indeed heard, far more than the average "man on the street" who owns the state forests
