Bill,
Yesterday I immediately e-mailed Claudia about her incorrect quotes, but as of today she has not made the necessary correction. As you can imagine I am already getting e-mails and phone calls about her quote.

Specifically Claudia states the "Bruce Spencer supports the corrective actions and FSC critique of forestry at Quabbin and cannot support what is currently planned and implemented there". In my correspondence with Claudia I did not mention the corrective actions required by the audit, but said that the audit problems (justified) were on the north Quabbin.  I also said that the two south Quabbin foresters were doing excellent work and  easily passed the audit.

These are stressful times for all and any quote attributed to me that doesn't distinguish the poor cutting practices of the north Quabbin with the excellent forestry of the south Quabbin would be seen as nothing short of betrayal.

Bruce, do you think the top mgt. of the Quabbin have any responsibility for the failure of some of the foresters or can they just claim they didn't know what was going on?

Is it reasonable to try to determine what caused these failures? Are these 2 foresters just scapegoats for bad policies?

And, some of us still want to know why the Quabbin was off the table of the vision process. Will Bill Logue or Rick Sullivan ever give us an answer? If there is a good, valid answer, then why not give it to us?

Joe

Joe,
I think everyone involved with the the management of public land, including top management, should be held responsible for failures. And I think it is reasonable to determine what caused these failures at Quabbin. I don't see any scapegoats at Quabbin.

Joe,

i believe the culture at quabbin is able to make the necessary mid-course corrections. The have valid management plans in place...a well reasoned approach and good history.

Maybe so, but is that a good justification for not allowing the vision process to discuss the Quabbin? If the professor who lives near the recent problem didn't complain to the Globe and Chris Matera didn't go look at it- would anyone ever have know about it? Would the senior mgt. of the Quabbin have even know there was a problem? Do the senior managers go out and look at the harvests? We've heard that the foresters were punished- would that have happened if there hadn't been a public outcry?

Oh, that's right- we aren't suppossed to be discussing the Quabbin- it's off the table.

i do think claudia's comments either misunderstood bruce's comments or only presented a portion of them...but a retraction and correction is in order....
