Spectra is a line of GE oven ranges. Most Spectra ranges come with a self-cleaning cycle, which will clean the oven with intense heat without the use of oven cleaners and a lot of scrubbing. Before using the self-clean function, be sure to read the manual for your specific model. There are, however, general instructions for self cleaning a GE Spectra range.

Before you self clean your GE Spectra kitchen range, remove the shelves, broiler pan and any cookware or aluminum foil you may have in your oven. You Spectra model may also have a roasting rack or probe; remove those also. According the GE Spectra manual, on some models the convection roasting rack and shelves can remain; however it also states that they will darken and become hard to slide. For these reasons, removing them is recommended.

Close the oven door and latch it (if it has a latch). The "Lock Door" light will flash if you don't do this. All controls should be set to off. Set your oven to self clean by touching "Self Clean" on the touch pad. Then choose your desired clean time, between three and five hours. On all Spectra models it is automatically set for four hours. On most models, you choose either -- or + to adjust the time. On other models, the "Self Clean" button on the touch pad actually says "Self Clean STD/LOW." On those models you can only select a three- or four-hour cleaning. Four is automatic and to select three hours, you have to touch the button twice. You will see the corresponding number of hours on the display screen of all models.

When the clean cycle is finished, allow your oven to cool. If it is not clean, repeat the process. However, if you only notice white ash (usually salt deposits), use a damp rag to wipe it up. If this does not work, the GE Spectra manual states to use a soap-filled steel wool pad. To rinse, the manual says to use a vinegar and water mixture to remove all the salt and soapy residue.

Occasionally, the F7 error code is caused by a loose or dirty ribbon cable. The ribbon cable connects the key panel with the control board. To access the ribbon cable, the panel covering the control board at the back of the oven needs to be removed. Once the panel is removed, the ribbon cable can be disconnected and cleaned with a pencil eraser or by purchasing an electrical cleaner.

The ribbon cable is usually disconnected from the control board and key panel by releasing tabs that hold the ribbon cable in place. When removing the ribbon cable, be careful not to damage the ribbon cable connectors. In some cases, simply removing and then reattaching the ribbon cable will solve the F7 issue.

If cleaning and reconnecting the ribbon belt has not solved the F7 issue, you will likely need to replace either the key panel or control board. You may be able to diagnose the part responsible for the F7 error by visually inspecting the parts. If the control board has signs of burning or broken wires, it will most likely need to be replaced. If there are signs of moisture getting into the key panel, broken seals, or it is obvious that a key or two are stuck, the key panel will likely need to be replaced.

Depending on the model, if there are no visible signs of damage to either part, you may be able to determine which part is responsible by disconnecting the ribbon cable that connects the control board and key panel and leaving it detached for 24 hours. During this time, the oven should be observed to see if the F7 error code returns. If it returns, it indicates that the control board is responsible for the issue.

Replacing the control board is typically a lot more expensive than replacing the key panel. Therefore, if you are unsure which part is responsible, seek professional advice before removing and replacing the part.

Note that access to the key panel may depend on the model of the GE oven that you have. Taking photos during the process, particularly of the wiring, may help to ensure the oven is reassembled correctly.

If you need to remove the original key panel from the old control board console, a heat gun can be used. The key panel should be carefully heated until it can be removed without causing damage. The key panel should then be refitted to the new control board console.

NOTE: On models with light-colored glass cooktops, it is normal for the cooking zones to change color when hot or cooling down. This is temporary and will disappear as the glass cools to room temperature.

Even after the surface units are turned off, the glass cooktop retains enough heat to continue cooking. To avoid overcooking, remove pans from the surface units when the food is cooked. Avoid placing anything on the surface unit until it has cooled completely.

Stainless Steel Aluminum: heavy weight recommended Good conductivity. Aluminum residues sometimes appear as scratches on the cooktop but can be removed if cleaned immediately. Because of its low melting point, thin weight aluminum should not be used.

Copper Bottom: Copper may leave residues which can appear as scratches. The residues can be removed, as long as the cooktop is cleaned immediately. However, do not let these pots boil dry. Overheated metal can bond to glass cooktops. An overheated copper bottom pot will leave a residue that will permanently stain the cooktop if not removed immediately.
