If I start a new Word document ("Document 1") and go to save it to a Dropbox folder with a new name ("The saved document"), the document window will have the new name across the top for a couple of seconds and then it goes back to 'Document 1'. The file will appear in the dropbox folder but it will be empty. Same thing happens saving other documents - I end up with empty docs. Sometimes it appears to work if I save it to another dropbox folder rather than the one I want to save it in, or perhaps it's just that it works after multiple attempts. But I'm finding it's easier to not save to dropbox at all, but save to my local drive then copy and paste it over. It's annoying. I have no problem saving to OneDrive or to the C drive so it seems to be a dropbox issue.

I'm trying to save a Word document as .docx, but each time I click the 'Save' button the dialog reappears and asks me where to save the file. This only happens when I try to save it as a .docx file, any other format works just fine. I have tried pasting the contents into a new file, but the same happens.

I've just struck a very similar problem --- could save the document in 2003 (.doc) format, but trying to save in .docx resulted in an endless loop of SaveAs dialogs popping up, and no document actually being saved.

This enabled me to save a document in Word 2010 format. The document was saved in Compatibility mode, but I could easily revert that by choosing File/Info/Convert to convert it to a full 2010-format document.

I had this same problem in Word 2013. Turns out they let you insert an .ico as a picture, but after doing so I got the endless save loop. Took me a while to find the problem, but after taking out all the icons it saved just fine.

The issue comes from formulas, tables or the like. Make a new Word-Document and copy and paste the text, formulas in parts step by step. Try to save after each pasting. Change or retype the actual part, if the save loop starts again.

In WORD 2010, if a formula or the text that serves as the target for a table of contents is edited and is left in red-line track changes mode, this can cause this same behavior in the WORD file. Simply undoing or accepting the tracked changes in the formula or regenerating the table of contents can fix the problem.

In Word 2013 I Opened the file that was not saving. Click on File tab and then select Info. I selected Check for Issues and then selected Inspect Document. This listed some potential issues and gave me a choice to resolve specific issues that were identified. After resolving the issues I was able to save my document again.

In my case the thumb drive where I had been saving the file got damaged. Strangely, I couldn't save it elsewhere as a Word file but I could as an RTF. Repairing the thumb drive (using windows tool) fixed the problem and allowed me to save as a word file.

Whenever I wish to create a new MS word document and use it, I do not use previous templates. I make a folder and right click inside the folder to choose the New Microsoft Word Document option from the drop down menu and work on that.

I do not use any previously saved templates and do copy paste of the docs that I build, I make a new MS word doc by using the right click option and work on it. I rename it according to the topic that I write on.

None of the above worked for me on my new laptop running Windows 10 and Office 2010. What did work was removing the trial version of Office that came with the laptop. I did this using Control Panel, Programs, Programs and Features, selecting the relevant version of Office, right clicking and selecting Uninstall.

I had the same problem, while I did not have any functions in my file. I had copied graphs from Excel to Word, after which Word got this saving loop. I copied each graph and pasted it as an image, so there is no link to Excel any more. After that, Word saved fine again.

None of these worked for me either, I could fix it by closing down word then go to taskmanager (control + shift + escape) then shut down all Microsoft Word processes. Then restart office and it should work fine.

I had several hundred pages of statistical equations and multiple pictures. I wanted to edit my document but it was failing to save all the time, so I saved an unedited version of my file as a Word 1997-2003 document. This made all the equations turn into images.

Then, I reopened the newly saved document, selected all and copied it into a new Word 2016 document. The equations were no longer images and I successfully edited and saved the document. I hope this works for all - I lost roughly a day till I did it right.

Basically the word process I was using was messed up and by starting a new fresh instance I could do anything like copy all the contents to a new document and save again without the error coming up or a save loop.I'm very happy i saw that parameter here:

Though this mightn't be the problem faced in the original question, in my case saving also went into a loop (and couldn't even open save-as): the problem, and hence solution, was the max path length (of 255 or 260 characters).

I want to make a report in word but when i click on generate report, it should ask the destination to save it and then pops up the display of report in word with the name I specified.new_report is a template with a bookmark.See the untitled.vi.

What do you really want to do? Incidentally, I recommend that you stick with HTML Reports. I've used this Report Type when I wanted to make "documentation" (for example, run a series of tests and write a "Report" saying what worked and what didn't) for a LabVIEW Program. Word I found too finicky, and the LabVIEW Interface somewhat difficult to use (but that's just my opinion).

If you read the Help (or do some "experimentation" by seeing what happens when you run your VI, and specifically when the error pops up), you'll see that you need to have a File Path ready before calling Save Report to File. Have you looked at the functions on the File I/O Palette? Do you see anything that looks interesting and useful on the Advanced File Functions button?

If you are writing a Word Report, the usual "unit" would be text, that is a single string with lines of (you'll forgive the circular definition, please) "text" separated into separate units, "lines", by "End of Line Characters". Look at the Word-specific functions on the Report Generator Palette and see if one looks more appropriate for saving Text in a Word Report (as opposed to a 2D array of strings, which is what you have in your code).

I think my req was quite close to what you have proposed. All i need was a dialog box which u gave me.No inputs or paths are req as when i run VI it automatically pops up to enter a name and select a path.In the end i just added.docx to make a complete path. Thanks buddy!

I'm trying to set up a Word template to force users to save their file as a new Word document instead of overwriting the template file, but not having any luck in getting it to work. I've attached a screenshot of what I set up under preferences > save. Does anyone have any idea what I'm missing?

The secret is to save templates as templates, not documents. Open your "template" and select Save As... Choose Save As Type Word Template (.dotx, rather than the standard .docx). Word likes to relocate templates to default template folders, so be sure to check the folder into which it will be saved.

Unfortunately this isn't working the way its supposed to. I saved the files as a dotx file but instead of forcing a resave, it will overwrite the template file. If I mark the file as read-only, it forces it that way, but just saving it as a template doesn't do it.

How are you accessing your .dotx files? Are you going to Word > File > Open...? If so, that's your edit mode. If you choose New instead of Open, then select Personal rather than Office, you should be able to use templates instead of editing them.

@GREENCREST I have found that the secret is in how you open the Template. If you go to File:Open you are working in edit mode on the template itself. If you double click on the closed Template, then it will force you to save as a new document.

@Badearth5 It would be very nice if the double click worked as it used to and actually opened a new document, or if a right click brought up 'New' as an option, but lately the double click only opens the template (and if you don't check the small print at the top of the screen you may not notice it's .dotx) and right-clicking gives a menu with no 'New' option unless you go down to 'Other' where it is now hidden away. I've complained about this before, including sending in screenshots; there seemed to be a temporary fix, but now it's reverted. In what possible world do people want to edit a template more often than they create a new document from it?
